    BASAL tears lubricate your eyeball.

    REFLEX tears protect your eyes against irritants.

    Emotional tears contain 20-25 percent more protein than basal/reflex, including various hormones. Crying is a functionless byproduct of increased autonomic activity in distressed individuals.


    Maybe crying is just a way of clearing yourself out emotionally, or that's what Aristotle would have us believe.
