Does it matter what degree you do before a PGDE/PGCE for primary?

My friend is doing a maths degree and is wondering if this would still enable him to get onto a primary PGDE/PGCE courses in either England or Scotland.

As far as I know, it would. They don't really care what your undergrad is (they just care that you have a degree, and if you're teaching in secondary education or above you should have a degree in that subject). In fact, if it's in maths or science, you might have a stronger chance of getting a placement in most schools because there's a stronger shortage of maths and science teachers.
See the following for info on PGCE/PGDE: https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/what-is-a-pgce (they key is to have QTS)

See the following as examples of the entry requirements of PGCE/PGDE courses in primary education:

Anecdotally I’d say not a problem. My first undergrad is in American Politics and I did QTS via assessment only route (after being a TA.) as you can imagine my subject knowledge was none too useful when teaching year one 😝
Thank you! I'll pass this on. He just wanted to make sure before he started to ask primary schools about getting some experience in the classroom.
