You have to apply to them.
It's not like in the movies - they actually have a careers website where they advertise jobs.

They do for field/surveillance based positions.

Well, it depends what you mean by approached, I'm pretty sure quite a few people get asked to apply for jobs. Most companies head hunt people from good universities, and I' expect the intelligence services do the same.

True, although you can apply for a Job at MI5 -6
and you are not allowed to tell anyone of your acceptance to the Job except next of kin who has to sign a declaration of silence.
It's all on their recruitment part of the website lol

Yep just like Oxbridge say that anyone can get in with the minimum requirements, I'm sure that MI5/6 say anyone with a degree can apply. However I know from a legitimate source that they still approach individuals.

They may still approach people but as if they're going to boast around the internet - if you're clever enough to be head hunted by MI5, you're going to be clever enough to keep quiet about it.

I thought jobs in these areas had to be confidential? (Ie, not telling everyone on TSR that you've been approached...)

Yes yes, I could see why you would be susceptible to disbelief.
