Actually i saw that. Its not a cure. Let me tell you why. The resistance is present in WHITE people. In a small number too. Firstly you have to be compatible to receive a bone marrow. Secondly they have to kill off all your existing marrow with drugs and radiation..which puts a lot of strain on the body, like it says in the article 20-30% will die during that phase. Thirdly...bone marrow transplants cannot be done between a white man and a black man, and since the resistance is present in white people, then its not a full cure. Thats just my two cents.

Hopefully this won't cause the AIDS virus to mutate into something even worse.

Even if it does cure HIV/AIDS, whatever, it is not the wonder cure they are looking for. This is mainly because it is not feasible to attempt this kind of thing on a mass scale in Africa, as there is not enough money and the facilities simply don't exist.

Not much to discuss really. No-one is going to argue a cure for AIDs is a bad thing. Well except for Kkoll maybe.

It's much more complicated than that. The patient used in that study had a resistance to HIV-

Hütter made use of this when treating his patient for leukaemia, which he had developed in addition to AIDS. To treat the leukaemia, Hütter did the usual thing and sought a bone-marrow donor to replenish the patient's blood supply following chemotherapy to kill the existing, cancerous blood cells.

But Hütter's new approach was to get a donor who had the double HIV-resistant CCR5 mutation. This meant that the patient's replenished blood system would effectively be resistant to HIV, locking out the virus for good. This is what appears to have happened, and Hütter declared his patient "functionally cured".

So has he come up with a technique to save the millions of people worldwide with the HIV virus? Trouble is, compatible donors with the CCR5 mutation are few and far between, restricting practically to zero the chances of repeating the procedure on a large scale.

A bone marrow transplant would kill 1/3 of people. :p: And it may only be temporary. Plus the tests they've conducted on the patient aren't comprehensive, and he could still have HIV.

I don't think it would be a cure for AIDS though, only HIV, and they're still decades at least from a cure. It does show promise for Gene Therapy though.

Basically the resistance is within 1% of Europeans, and the cells the bone marrow produces don't have antigens (they may not be antigens but they act in the same way) that allows the HIV virus to pass into the cell, and so it just bounces off.

Still, it's hopeful for the future.:yep:
