Geography, Psychology and English Lit- A- Level

Hi everyone, I’m currently considering my A-Levels and I’m thinking of this potential combination: Geography, Psychology and English Lit. It would be really helpful to hear your views on these subjects and if they are good choices, but also if you have any suggestions. Career-wise I’m not too sure what I’d like to do, but I enjoy humanities/ creative subjects more than STEM subjects. Thank you!

Halo!

I've taken two of the same subjects psych and lit. Your options do complement each other really well. Career-wise you could go into psychology as there aren't any specific subject requirements and perhaps look at a career such as clinical psychology where you could examine people's behaviours and help provide therapy if you like helping people and doing social work. You could be a journalist if you like writing and geography really ties in well with that. I think you have a lot of options open for you. I hope this helps!

This is very helpful, thank you! Also, if you don’t mind me asking, what was your other A-level subject and are you thinking to go into psychology (unless you are doing it already)?

Hi there. I love English Literature. It’s a subject I thoroughly enjoyed studying. I didn’t take Psychology or Geography so I can’t say anything about those.

Here’s what I have to say that you may want to take into consideration. You can enter a Psychology course at the university level without taking A-Level Psychology. You just need to do a science subject or, in most or all cases, Math. Math is accepted by top universities like Bristol, Oxford, and UCL. I haven’t checked most of the other courses. With this in mind, even if you might study Psychology at the degree level, you might want to choose A-Level Math over A-Level Psychology. The reason why is that Math is the required subject for more courses than Psychology is. Economics and some PPE courses, for example, often require you to have A-Level Mathematics.

Nonetheless, if you’re sure no uni course you’d be interested in down the road will require Math and you have your heart set on A-Level Psychology, then go for it.

Sociology also sounds really interesting, I’ve been considering it as an option too, but I’m still thinking lol. Thanks again for your help! I wish you the best of luck in your studies!

Thanks a lot for answering! I’ve thought about Maths as an option since it’s a great facilitating subject, but I’ve never really had a passion for it and find it quite stressful, though as you said with psychology, it’s not always required for a uni course in the subject, but I thought it could help even out my other two subjects given they are more humanity based.

Heya, I do psych and english lit! There's quite a bit of work load with both, particularly English lit, but as long as you're good with essays and good at managing your time, you should be absolutely fine! Psych is my favourite subject and I really like how it can be applied to so many scenarios, and with English lit, even though the exam is all essay based, in class we do debates and discussions which is really fun! Would definitely recommend both 🙂

Hi everyone! I really appreciate all your helpful comments (even a year later haha) It’s great to hear how much everyone enjoys their subjects, and I wish all of you the best of luck in all the goals you want to accomplish! Just as an update, initially I picked English Literature, Economics and History. However, after the first week of school, I realised History wasn’t for me and switched to Mathematics. I hope to go into the financial sector which is another reason why I switched. Once again, thank you for all your advice and for sharing your experiences! All the best xx

I do AQA too! We do the AQA A course though so it sounds like our courses are different - for paper 1 we do Othello, Gatsby and an AQA love anthology, and then for paper 2 we do the Wipers Times, All Quiet and the Up the Line to Death poetry anthology! For my coursework I did Pride and Prejudice and Romeo and Juliet 🙂

I know this is from a year ago but I got the same subjects and even though I haven't even started sixth form I'm worried about what to do in university bc these weren't the original subjects I wanted to study
