The importance of the Cuban Missile crisis for relations between the USA and the Soviet Union (8 marks)

The Cuban Missile Crisis was important for relations between the USA and the Soviet Union because at first it greatly worsened relations between the two superpowers. This was because it almost led to a nuclear war, with Kennedy, on 22 October 1962, blockading Cuba in order to prevent a Soviet convoy from delivering nuclear weapons to Astro. Khrushchev was furious with Kennedy because he did eventually have to back down and ordered the convoy to turn around on 24 October.

The Cuban Missile Crisis was also important in relations between the USA and the Soviet Union because it led to the setting up of the ‘hotline’. The two superpowers nearly went into nuclear war a war which would have devastated the world. The crisis was over and to ensure that the leaders would communicate instead there was a second crisis they created the ‘hotline’. The ‘hotline’ was a telephone link that was established between the White House in Washington DC and the Kremlin in Moscow. This is important as it shows that the two sides are trying to work together to ensure any problems that arise will get fixed.
