MA Social Work 2023

Hey beautiful people, I’m currently applying for a masters in Social Work for 2023 and I was wondering if anyone was also applying. I created a thread in the hopes of finding others who are on the same journey and to share tips on interviews and the application process.

Hopefully we will also find others who are applying to the same unis and make friends!

Introduce yourself by telling us if you’ve sent of your application yet, your undergraduate course, the unis you’ve applied for and if you’ve heard back from any yet. I’ll introduce myself!

Undergrad: History with Education and Social Science

Application sent: Yes

Unis applied to: Sheffield, Nottingham, Manchester, UEA, Durham and Sussex

Heard back: Sheffield (Interview)

Good luck with your applications! 😊

Hi @nishadea :h:

Seen that you've applied to study your masters here at UEA so thought I'd drop by and say hello. Congratulations on the interview with Sheffield! Wishing you lots of luck with the rest of your applications and if you have any questions at all about being a student in Norwich, just let me know. Have you ever visited here before?

Aww thank you so much Danielle! 😊

I visited years ago when I was applying for my undergrad and I love it! Need to visit again. UEA was always a uni that stuck with me. What’s the social life like for postgraduate students?

What is your personal favourite thing about UEA?

You're very welcome! :h:

Glad you liked Norwich when you visited! It really is a lovely city - and it's wonderful to hear UEA stuck with you. As an undergraduate, not a postgraduate, I can only comment so far but I'd assume the social life is pretty similar! The fact we're a campus university really lends itself to the social aspect of studying. It's like our own little village within a city! We have our own on campus bars and a nightclub venue, an abundance of societies and then naturally you have the city centre of Norwich itself a short journey away from the campus to facilitate socialising too.

My favourite thing about UEA would either be the beautiful scenic campus (lots of lovely green space, fresh air, and a beautiful lake!), or the really knowledgeable and friendly lecturers! There are some really interesting people here.

Hey @nishadea

As a postgraduate student myself, it's so exciting that you're applying to UEA for your Masters! I did my undergrad here as well so I've definitely got a good perspective of student life here at UEA (and the wonderful city of Norwich). I think the social life for a postgrad is more or less the same as an undergrad as you still have the same opportunities and more! We have our own postgraduate bar (Scholar's Bar) where most postgrads congregate with a weekly Tuesday quiz, there's postgrad specific SportsPark drop-ins like badminton and swimming and all clubs and societies are welcome to postgrad students! So lots of opportunities to socialise with people doing Masters and students in general at UEA.

As for my favourite thing about UEA... I think it's just the overall community vibe we have, because we're a campus Uni, you always bump into someone you know! And there're so many coffee and study spots dotted around the campus (and across Norwich) that makes summative season a little less stressful :h:

Let me know if you have any other questions and best of luck with the application!

Hi, this may be a long shot as I know this was a year ago, but what school did you end up going to? I got into university of Manchester and the university of Edinburgh and am torn on which will be better in the long run. I just want to hear about students experiences studying a MA Social Work at the University of Manchester as I can’t really find anything. Thank you!!

Hey lovely, I didn't end up going in 2023 but will be going back this year and I will be going to Durham mainly because of scholarships. But I have heard that Manchester is very good - I would have gone there but Durham had an edge just because of the financial support.

Hey, did you apply for a the social work bursary through NHS? I've been told this pays some towards your tuition fees and you get bursary payments as well as being able to apply for a maintenance loan as you did at undergrad level?

Hey lovely, yes I did! I'm not sure if I was nominated yet but hopefully I will find out soon. Did you?

Yes £4052 goes towards tuition fees if you receive the NHS bursary for both years and you can get extra for your bursary if you have a child or have an adult that is financially dependent on you.

hey! So sorry I didn't get the notification that you had replied! I completely chickened out! I have a one year old and I just couldn't find enough on the finance side to see if I could actually afford to study it sadly and didn't want to find out when I'd already committed! I'm going to apply for the approach social work grad scheme when it opens though and hopefully if I'm not successful I'll find more info out for applying next year! How are you getting on with it? Did you find out if you were nominated yet?
