English language requirements at Oxford Brookes University

At Oxford Brookes we welcome applicants from all over the world from a wide range of different countries. If your first language is not English, then you will need to show that your English language skills are at a high enough level to succeed in your studies.

The English entry requirement for your course will be expressed as an IELTS level and refers to the IELTS Academic version of the test (not IELTS General Training). IELTS is the most common test, however we also accept a wide range of alternative English language qualifications. Examples include:

Cambridge English: C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency

International Baccalaureate

Pearson PTE Academic

TOEFL (including TOEFL ibt Home Edition Online)

We can accept country specific qualifications (listed here) as well if you do not have any of the qualifications above mentioned or if you are from a country that UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) considers as majority English speaking, then you will not have to prove your English language level for visa purposes. You can check the full list of exempt countries here.

If you are interested in improving your English Language level prior to your undergraduate or postgraduate degree, you can apply to one of our pre-sessional English language courses. Please find here some more details about our 4 different types of courses, depending on your current English language level.

Ice breaker questions:

Which country are you from?

What is your current English language level?

Which English language qualification do you have / are thinking of doing?

Please let us know if you have any questions or would like some more information by leaving a comment below!
