Lincoln Vs DMU Vs Derby

I have gotten all my offers from Lincoln, DMU and Derby, I have been to the Lincoln and DMU open day and will be going to the Derby open day on the 29th... I am unsure which one I should make my firm choice and which one I should make my Insurence choice.

Persoanlly I would like to go to a good university but also go to a university which I will enjoy and will be able to have a good social life.

Please post your opinions.
I remember looking round Derby on an open day before I came to Lincoln, I didn't like how the halls of residence were a bus ride away from the campus; which isn't the case in Lincoln - everything is within walking distance.

Obviously a complaint is that the reputation isn't as good as it could be but knowing many people on the Media Production course at Lincoln - everyone enjoys it, and finds the work load quite high. I like that they've increased the UCAS points guide from 280 in the previous years as you'll get less wasters, my course only had 240points - and there a lot of people who don't want to work - but I guess you'll get that everywhere.

I have no knowledge of DMU (apart from their free usb stick that I have).

I'd recommend Lincoln as you'll have a good social life, enjoy not spending money on transport and have everything close by but don't judge by my opinions. Lincoln is still a developing university, buildings are still yet to be built - yet the Media building is well established and has some good TV/radio studios etc.

I'm from Derby although I don't go to university there. I think the problem with Derby is that it is constantly overshaddowed by Nottingham, both in terms of the city and also the university. Being in Derby is annoying as you have Nottingham so close yet so far for shopping and nightlife. You can get the Red Arrow bus or train between the two and it only takes about 20-30 minutes, but having lived in Derby and been to college in Nottingham, I hate living on the Derby side of the two as the nightlife in Nottingham is so much better, in my opinion.

Also... please don't take this in a bad manner, as its not my personal opinion: Derby is often laughed at by people in the local area as a bit of a crap university, and where people only go if they can't get in elsewhere. There are loads of home students at Derby Uni (a lot of my friends go there) and most of them are there because they couldn't really be bothered to leave home or take the step to university, and Derby was a nice option. I live about 20 minutes from the city and I have friends who moved into halls there, and said all of their flatmates were from about half an hour from the university so they all went home every weekend. This might be difficult if you're coming from a different place as its a very local university. Locally, its sort of said that you can get into Derby with your eyes closed and all you have to do is send off a blank application. It is constantly compared to Nottingham, Trent, Sheffield and Hallam universities, and its generally assumed that you went to Derby as you couldn't get into one of these. Obviously, this is only an issue if you are bothered about the local reputation of the university but I felt I should mention it. Again, I don't share the opinion but it is the popular one in the area.

Is your course at the Buxton or City campus in Derby? As if its in Buxton I wouldn't come here. Buxton is nice if you're a pensioner wanting a lovely day out in the Peak District for a bit of fish and chips, but not really as a student!

One of my best friends applied to Lincoln and I went with her for the interview. It looked like a really nice city and I get the feeling it will have more to offer as it isn't as overshaddowed by somewhere such as Nottingham. Here, Notts and Derby are so close that all of the good stuff is only in Notts, whereas Lincoln is that little bit more independent and stands alone in the country so I would assume will offer more as people have further to go to get to the next big place.

The course I am doing is at the city campus
In that case you don't need to bother about Buxton then! You got the better end of the deal.

Its just some of my friends applied there then realised in September that they were actually supposed to be doing it at Buxton, which is about an hours drive from Derby.

Thats good then.
Hi there! I am at Derby, 2nd year History & Sociology Joint Honours.
I really love it. I would definately recommend going to an open day. http://www.derby.ac.uk/opendays
I'll tell you a few things about what i like. I get loads of choice over the modules i take. I only have 1 compulsory one this year. I also have a work placement, so my CV will get a boost too!
The city itself is quite small, but i like that about it. Halls are a 15 minute walk to the uni, and 15 again the other direction into town. I really enjoyed not living on campus, I enjoyed the freedom.
But like i said, you're better off coming to see for yourself, chat to other students, see what they think
The few people I know who went to Lincoln are the types who at college rolled into lessons late drunk off the night before, did drugs, and stuff.

Not that I didn't turn up late all the time, but suppose my point is that while it'll have a good social life, I'm not sure if I'd want to share university with those types (and I'm big on social life).
I'm at Lincoln and I don't see that - I'm guessing judging you need 300 points that you want to be on Media Production - the people that acheive 300 points are usually not the sort of people who have been druggies at college, so you'll be interacting with some decent people - yeh you get wasters everywhere but if you make your decision based upon the previous post, I'd just have to argue that.

i've also got my offers from Lincoln, Derby and DMU
i'm going to make Lincoln my firm beacuse i fell in love with the place when i went over for an Open day. It was very pretty and i loved how the uni is very new and its facilities are up to date  i was a little worried when i heard that Lincoln didnt have a good night life and i've also heard that the student village accommodation is not very good either but that hasnt really changed my mind about lincoln.

My boyfriend goes to Derby and i spent some time there last week when i went to visit him...he has an ensuite plus room that looked pretty good (it was basic but pretty much all u need). I quite liked the town too it looked safe and the shopping was great  i didnt go out to clubs there but when i walked past a few of them one night they were full of ppl and didnt look bad at all  i was all for making Derby my insurance however in my offer they had changed the entry requirements from 260 points to 300 points :/ which sucks as Lincoln is only 280 points and its pointless to have Derby as my insurance if it asks for more. :frown: i was really disappointed about this cos Derby had a really good feel to it and i thought i'd be happy there if i didnt get into Lincoln :frown:

As for DMU, i dont know that much about. i went to an openday but tbh i dont remember much about it. i was wondering if anyone could give me any info on DMU as i might be putting it as my insurance  i do remember the accommodation looked really good but i dont know much about the City and its nightlife etc.

hope this helps  x
