Can you fail a Police Entry Medical test with your BMI?

Hello,

So i'm currently on course to join a Direct Entry Detective course in the police. I've gone through all the assessments and interviews and passed. I've recently just done a fitness test and passed that too. I'm a well built lad i'd like to say, my bmi however is in the upper 30's. I am now worried about failing the medical test as i've been told they also check your bmi? I play rugby regularly and go to the gym and have been on a weight loss journey for a while, is the BMI testing strict?

Hi, the BMI is usually between 18 and 30 however, it is force specific if you’re just over, they may consider accepting it or look at individuals on a case by case basis. Once you get to the medical, you’ll have to fill out a health form where you can mention further details so OH team can discuss it with you but as mentioned before this is a force specific thing some take common sense approach and measure body fat if you fall above the limit but others can be a computer says no situation

Hello, thanks for your reply

Problem is, i am not just over, im around 36 BMI. I am very athletic person and reducing my weight continuously since last year. I play football regularly and passed the police fitness test with flying colours. No medical problems, all clear on my medical form. Do you think they will let me through?

This quote is from a serving officer hope it helps you 'Durham wouldn’t even consider my application because my bmi wasover but I’m now week 2 working for WYP, every force is different'
From what I've heard n seen as mentioned before some are really strict others not so but if you're with WYP you might be ok they do seem to be a little more relaxed about the whole bmi thing.
Personally I'd say it is an outdated system nd approach but you maybe ok with wyp it'll all depend on the day just explain yourself and hopefully goes smooth for ya
