Okay, AQA practice examination question.

1) Give the type of reactive intermediate formed during catalytic cracking.

2) Give the type of reactive intermediate formed during thermal cracking.

Any help appreciated.

1) Catalytic cracking - The mechanism involves carbocations rather than radicals.

2) Thermal cracking - The species initially formed are radicals, as a carbon-carbon bond undergoes homolytic fission.
