Can I do a Psychology/Neuropsychology degree without Biology and Maths A levels?

Hey there,

To get straight to the point I take Psychology, English Lit and Sociology A levels. has that restricted me from going on to do Psychology/Neuropsychology at Uni? At GCSE level I was still uncertain on what career path to follow so I just took subjects I enjoyed. Now doing some research into requirements at Uni, I have found that in order to take a Psychology or Neuropsychology degree I need two of Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths. I only have one and it is too late to switch subjects :frown:. Is there anything extra I could do to get past this? Any input or advice would be strongly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,
A lot of Universities would only require one science based A-level for psychology from the follower ones ( biology, psychology ,maths , physics ,chemistry). Since you are doing psychology A-level you will still be able to apply for many universities for the psychology bsc. My classmate wants to do psychology at university and she does the exact same subjects as you. Just make sure you get 3 high grades predicted for you especially if you want to apply for the top universities. Also some universities do prefer for you to take 2 science based A-levels but it’s often preferred not required. Also for neuropsychology idk what your talking about here do you mean neuroscience with psychology or neuropsychology as a degree course?

Hi there,Thanks for replying. I was referring to taking a neuropsychology degree. I’m still relatively undecided between the two.

It is quite late to be changing courses (I assume you're in year 12). Have you talked to your school to see if it is possible at this stage? If it isn't, and you are certain that you have the wrong subjects for the degree you really want to pursue, then consider repeating year 12.

Heya!
I would recommend talking to your school and see whether it would be possible for you to change a subject :h: Explain to them your situation and hopefully they will be willing to help you out.
Alternatively, have you looked if unis offer a foundation year? The Foundation year is an extra year that is specifically designed for people who don't have the correct a-levels. Read more about it here.
You could also take a gap year after you are done with your current a-levels to do another a-level so that it could fit your entry requirements.

I hope this helps!

Hi @A_123?

From what I’ve read, a lot of universities do prefer two STEM A-Levels but I know plenty of students who have taken only one or even no STEM A-Levels. Personally I would recommend you do your best to get high grades and also, perhaps get in touch through call or email with the universities you’re planning on applying to and speaking to them. They’ll know better than anyone else if they’re likely to accept someone with one STEM A-Level and I know students who have gotten exceptions from the STEM rule as long as they got high grades through speaking to the universities themselves.

I hope this helps!

Hey,
I am a current 4th year at the uni of Nottingham.

It may be worth having a look at what modules are on offer through general BSc psychology degrees. A lot of unis will only offer Neuropsychology as a masters and a general psychology degree can be tailored to suit that as you go.
For example at Nottingham there are modules such as Neuropsychology of action and Neuropsychology and imaging as well as others that will have elements of Neuropsychology incorporated.
I have left a link below so you can have a look through yourself.

I hope this helps and if you have any questions just let me know,
Emily

Hi! At Lancaster University, we don't you to have taken any specific A-Level subjects in order to do a Psychology degree! The requirements are AAB, and more information can be found here: https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/psychology-bsc-hons-c800/#course-entry

Best of luck!

Hey,
I'm currently in a similar situation to you and I just wanted ask what you did? I take biology, psychology and english a levels and was debating switching english to chemistry, although I really don't want to, but I believe some universities require it?

They've not been online for nearly a year, so you may well not get a reply. You should be ok with those A Levels though, at least for psychology

Hello @A_123,

At the University of Southampton, you can apply for BSc psychology with or without biology and maths! As you do psychology, your entry requirements are likely to be AAB.

Hope this helped and let me know if you have any more questions!
