Oh dear. I go to this goth club sosmetimes, and the last half hour always contains songs of that calibre. They're great the first 3 times, then you just feel like sitting down when they play them. :frown:

Unless I'm particularly drunk I'm normally sitting down at bops, it's just too **** to dance to (except HoP).

I'll have to DJ one night - everyone can complain about my music taste then!

Oh yeah, more seriously, who does decide the music? The ents?

Cheese all round, I guess.

Well they're normally student DJs at bops, who generally are told to play just cheese by the College's student union/bar.
Ents are generally people who actually know what they're doing, ie locals (the Fez monday night DJ is a regular player at Clare Ents) and some touring national people, and sometimes the better students. Def no cheese.

Me DJing a bop would be really funny, I wouldn't go down well with the boppy crowd because I wouldn't be playing much cheese. Not sure if most people would also appreciate the range of stuff I'd play either, eg Old hip hop, happy hardcore, some trip hop, german industrial, nu metal, poppy rock, old style gangsta rap, 80s anthems etc. Would be amusing until everyone kills me lol.

'nuther question: how often do bops happen? How much are they likely to cost?
Oh yeah, how much do you think you spend on socialising each week? Pubs or the college bar?

Nice to see someone else with a varied music taste :p:

That depends on your college; at Sidney we have one every two weeks and they're £2 without costume, or £1 if you're in fancy dress. That's probably not too far off other colleges

=o we had three last term, and one this term (for the tsunami), but it's usually much less than once every 2 weeks! :P

That's cos we have ents at the weekend a lot, not so many other colleges do them as often as we do. I really hope we don't have a Valentine's one, not a great idea if you ask me.

Actually it's pretty normal for 3 in Mich at Clare, then it's normally 1/2 per term in the other terms. Tsunami bop was extra this term, can't remember if there's going to be a Valentines one or not.

Ents are pretty much weekly, sometimes twice weekly.

How much I spend depends on how much work I have to do, I must have spent a fortune in my freshers term and in May week (of course) but at other times I'm quite frugal until the last week of term when I normally go crazy.

I will most likely be having a bitter singles night somewhere that night. With alcohol, girly/soppy films and chocolate. A bop is NOT what I want.

Having read all these.. I'm worried.
I think my music tastes are pretty similar to Avalon's, maybe a bit more indie-ish. Cheesey pop is a big no-no.
I go "clubbing" (as the townies say) quite often, maybe 3 times a month. I hope there is something in Cambridge to my taste.

Try out the Kambar when you get here, might suit.

How bizarre. We don't have halfway hall till the end of term, which is also weird as it's more than halfway, for the people who are only doing three years (hopefully not me!)

Newnham are having an Anne Summers party as our anti-Valentine's ent.
to be honest you make of it what you want. some people where i am dont go out ever because its not their scene. Hoever, a reasonably amount of people at catz go out quite a bit. you cant expect the same standard of cubbing as elsewhere, but you can guarantee quite good nights. Formal swops followed by a club or another colleges entz/bops are a good option. the clubs are pretty fun as long as you dont make it a habit to go to the same ones each week. whenever you walk around these places you'd bump into about 30 people you knew just to get to the bar, as wel as loads you don't (mainly because they do get quite full). its a mixed bag really.
now that we are talking about nightlife and stuff i have a question.

i read in some colleges that there is this exeat system that wont allow students to leave from the college or smth...

so lets say for example there are 7 gigs in london of great bands that i want to go and headbang to...7 different nights. Won't i be able to go?!?!?!

i am confused about this thing. does anyone know more?
Reply 38
you can leave the college for a maximum of one night at any time. This means you must sign your exeat, and return the next day. After this i think you have to spend a night in college, and then you can go out again.

In general you can get away with not signing the exeat if you are away for a couple of days only, but if they notice you're gone (a bedder is likely to after a few days) then you're in deep ****.

If you want to take a week away, you can if you have good reason. 7 amazing gigs is not a good reason (despite what us students might say). Also they will be disinclined to let you stay away for more than a night if your work progress is lacking at all.
Either way, extended leave permission must be obtained from your tutor, and is usually only given in exceptional circumstances.

my bedder wouldn't notice me gone for a week o.O
