What do you think and why?

Personally, I'm in favour of an animal rights charter. I think it's a logical step in our history of granting freedoms to blacks, women, gay people etc. I think that will be the case one day too.

Woops! Sorry about some of the typos in the poll. The options should read:

Yes - animals should be granted rights; and yes I think it will happen in the future
Yes - animals should be granted rights; but I do not think it will ever happen
Undecided
No - animals should not be granted rights; but I do think it will happen in the future
No - animals should not be granted rights; and I do not think it will happen in the future

It's pointless.

Whatever people ban here, will just get done in a different country.

I don't, seeing as blacks, women and gays are human beings just like heterosexual white men, but animal's aren't.

Because we have the capacity to think and reason. We're clearly superior given our complete control of the planet, no other animal has ever managed anything even coming close to the kind of feats achieved by humans.

And wtf animals already have rights in Britain.

They weren't always viewed that way. And I don't limit the idea of rights to human beings anyway.

Dogs found on the street get taken into care. Does this happen to people?

What would animal rights constitute? The right for a gay ferret to marry a catholic duck-billed platapus?

No, but if you're prepared to pay for the enforcement of animal rights', maintain a European Court of Animal Rights etc go ahead - I don't care.

Not to anywhere near the same degree that people do though.

Their right to life and liberty, mainly.

I can assure you that I can break down any argument for logical distinctions between animals and humans, so you really don't want to go down that road to justify denying animals rights.

Yes, let's make it illegal to perform euthanasia on animals, and force their owners into pointless and expensive treatment.

Well, in the UK anyway, animals do have rights. It is against the law to abuse, or mistreat an animal and its usually punishable with a fine, or a ban from ever keeping an animal.

Arguably, a proper animal rights charter would make it illegal to own pets in the first place. I'm undecided on that point though.
