This is what’s concerning to me, I currently work for the MoD and do enjoy my job, but the lack of career progression within my department is frustrating, which is the reason I’ve applied for a BFO role.
Despite the post being a little more money and considerably closer to home, I’m worried the work/life balance aspect of the BFO job would be wildly different to what I’m used to (4 on/4 off).
Can anyone shed any light on the shift patterns?

Hi, I was a BFO a few years ago and did a five week shift pattern. Earlies, lates and nights. This pattern is not great but not to say this is the one you would be on. It depends on your location I believe. In the five week pattern you get 2 weekends out of five off and there are some quick turn arounds with the shifts. I am in the Police now and still on the same pattern and most people say they never feel well rested. I have done 4 on 4 off myself in the past and off the opinion it is a more stable work life balance, even if the shifts are a bit longer. If you are talking about adding a lot of travel time on to something like the five week shift pattern then I would say give it serious consideration. Carry on through the process though and when it gets to the end when you are offered the job and talk to the manager from the department you are joining, you can discuss what pattern you will be on and make the decision then when you have to... Hope this helps
