IBD is characterised as long-term inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and the bowel, which can damage the tissues over time. The inflammation develops due to the immune system incorrectly attacking the GI tract.

The symptoms of IBD are:

Persistent diarrhoea

Abdominal pain

Bleeding

Weight loss

Fatigue

IBD is considered to be a rare disease and it affects men, women and races equally. Treatment involves the use of steroids, biologics and immunosuppressants. Many patients may require surgery to treat their condition.
