Part 1 Architecture: Which University?

Bath, Birmingham City, Cardiff, Kent, Kingston, Loughborough or Nottingham Trent?

I've managed to narrow down my choices to the above universities for my undergraduate degree in Architecture and I was wondering if anyone who has studied at the above universities has any opinions to share about their experiences?

I ideally want a great community feel and decent societies, not interested in nightlife. I'm looking for a university where lecturers are supportive, accessible and clear, and assignments are well communicated with clear marking schemes. I'm looking for good access to model making facilities, libraries and studio space - bonus points if they are 24/7. Entry grades aren't a consideration point as I'm returning to education as a mature student.

Thanks in advance for your help!
Have you looked at discover uni website to see the detailed NSS results for each course? That will show how previous students rated the teaching, assessment and feedback and staff availability for each course.

Hi @lbkgx 👋

Great to hear you're interested in studying Architecture at NTU!

Our Architecture course focuses on allowing students to develop their skills in drawing, model-making and 3D visualisation in our industry-standard design studios and materials workshops, with an emphasis on live design projects from real clients. It's also ranked top 10 in the UK for graduate prospects (Times and Sunday Times University Guide, 2023), with 95% of our Architecture undergraduates being in work or further study within 15 months of finishing their degrees.

If you'd like to hear more about the course from one of our students, you can speak to them online through our live chat. Just search for Architecture in the area of study and select the student you'd like to speak to 🙌

Hope that helps! Let me know if have any other questions about studying at NTU - happy to help 😊

Hi there!

It's great to hear you are considering Kent as one of your choices
I'm third year architecture student at Kent and I can say that this university can offer pretty much all that you are asking for!

When it comes to societies, the university has such a wide range of student groups from academic societies, sports clubs, campaigning communities and once you get to join and commit, it really does feel like being a part of something. If you are not interested in nightlife, there are many alternative options like open lectures, smaller events, society gatherings, and also a cinema room if you fancy watching a movie out for a change! The student union has a very active Instagram page where you can keep up with events and things that most appeal to you.

While studying, I felt that lectures and tutors can be very helpful when you show commitment. For example, whenever I missed my sessions or lectures for any reasons, the tutors I have had, were willing to schedule a brief meeting just so I could make sure I could proceed well with my work. We also have academic advisors and a student support department that help massively. Tutors contribute majorly to your projects and are open to discussions, which I think is a great way to learn.

In our dedicated architecture building on campus, we have a very spacious and well-equipped studio close to the library which are both open 24/7 for students to use. The model-making workshop however is more regulated and it has opening/closing times.

The Canterbury campus is a great location, close to the town centre; better still, Canterbury is just one train away from London, which is always a plus, especially for architecture students

I hope this helps and best wishes!

Hi lbkgx,

I saw that you mentioned Loughborough and you're interested in finding out more about studying here, which is fantastic news, so I wanted to jump on this thread to help!

I am currently a placement student at Loughborough University, so hopefully I can offer some insight!

I would recommend reviewing our course page (if you haven't already!) regarding Architecture where you can find module information, rankings, study space information, students' work and more: https://www.lboro.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/architecture-barch/ It may be an idea to view what other students have said about studying Architecture at Loughborough here too: https://www.lboro.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/what-our-students-say/#subject-area=architecture-building-civil

Also, you mentioned a community feel and I feel Loughborough truly excels in this area! As it is a campus university, students really feel like a family here and feel safe here too. I spend the majority of my time on campus, between study spaces, the library, the student union and the gyms. Regarding societies, you can see a list of the societies that Loughborough has to offer here: https://lsu.co.uk/societies/list Loughborough offers such a range of student groups from sports clubs, academic societies and religious groups, making all students feel welcome and feel a part of something.

Away from the nightlife, I really enjoy the social life at Loughborough and found there is lots to do. There are lots of areas and spaces to relax with your friends, get a coffee and do some work. There are also a number of places to go in town, with lots of different coffee shops, restaurants, bars, two cinemas and lots more. The student union also puts on plenty of events which are all really fun!

I'm hoping this helps in some way - I know that choosing a university to study at can be a big decision.

Let me know if you have any other questions about studying at Loughborough I am happy to help!

Best wishes,
Lilia
