Changing from full time to part time postgrad - how does this effect finance?

Hi, I am thinking of changing from full-time to part-time MA, because my personal circs have changed. I have become a carer for my 98 year old Nan for 2 nights and days per week, plus taking on extra work to cover sick for my colleague. I am a trauma therapist, so the caseload is higher in numbers and also the weight of content. I would welcome any advice or information on how this change from FT to PT might effect my course and finance. TIA.

Hi @postgradinmy50s,

Postgrad finance can be very complicated - and is often dependent upon both the university in questions and the student's personal circumstances - so I would recommend speaking with your university (probably Student Services, the Finance Office, and/or your Personal Tutor in the first instance) in order to discuss your options and get specific advice tailored to your circumstances.

If your situation is short term, for example, you might be able to take a leave of absence as opposed to switching modes of study. There might also be support - financial, personal, and academic - that you can access from the university to help with your situation. Finally, they should be able to explain exactly what changes would occur with fees, funding should you opt to change to a part-time programme of study etc.

If you have not already done so, I would also advise having a chat with Citizens Advice (https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/) and/or Carers UK (https://carersuk.org/) as you may be entitled to Carer's Allowance or other benefits that reflect the additional caring responsibilities you have now taken on.
