Just got back from Athens an hour or so ago... haven't read most of this thread so sorry for anything I've totally ignored or repeat. I saw the women's gymnastics and the swimming yesterday morning/afternoon, saw Thorpe and co qualifying and the Ukraine, USA, Canada and Romania gymnastics teams. Apart from that I've seen nothing even on TV except a couple of swims when I was at Geneva airport including that 200m men's final.

Can't wait to start watching it all properly!

My recollection is that:

First 100m Hoogenband was ahead.
Thorpe overtook and pulled away in the next 50m.
Then he Sailed home over the last 50m.

Haha. I was there too. Holte End went nutty when Cole scored... what a sweet strike. It was also funny when Niemi started on his own defenders!

Ok each side has 11 players, and one team is batting whilst the other is bowling/fielding. The batting side decide the order of who will bat from best to worst generally, the last couple on the list will usually be really awful at batting because they're actually bowlers, however the oens at the top of the list will be specialised batsmen.

Only two batsmen are used at one time, so they send out their numbers one and two to the 'crease' which is that strip in the middle which is an orangey colour. One batsman stands in front of each wicket. On the other team there is a bowler, a wicket keeper and then the other 9 are fielders who just stand wherever the captain decides they should be. The bowler then runs up and bowls at one of the batsmen to try and get him out. This can be dont a number of ways;
Bowled - this is when the ball directly hits the stumps.

Caught - obviously when any of the 11 fielding players catch the ball, it has to carry right to them without bouncing though.

LBW - (leg before wicket) If the ball was going on target, but gets blocked the the batmens leg pads then it's out.

Stumped/run out - if the batsmen are running and the fielders throw the ball back quickly and it hits the stumps whilst the batmen are still 'out of the crease'* then they're out. Also if the bowler bowls, and the batsman charges forward to smack it but misses, and it then goes to the wicket keepeer who then hits the stumps then they're out.

*By 'in the crease' i am referring to a white line not far from either of the stumps, the batsman has to have hit bat over this line to be safe from being stumped out.

When the bowling/fielding side get one of the opening batsman out number three in the order comes along, and they keep coming until 10 people are out. (It's 10 not 11 because two batsmen have to be at the crease at all times.) So to sum up, the aim of the bowling/fielding side is to take 10 wickets.

The aim of the batsmen is to gain runs. They do this by hitting the ball into spaces between the fielders and then running back and fourth down the crease, they have to get to the oposite white line, each time they do this one run is gained, if they run back again they gain 2 runs and so on. Also the entire pitch is surrounded by a white ropes quite fat away, if they hit the ball well it'll reach to the white rope and if it goes over the rope they'll gain 4 runs without actually having to run. If they hit it so hard that it crosses the rope without boucning on the ground they'll gain 6 runs! The batsmen just want to gain as many runs as possible.

The teams will usually contains about half bowlers, half batsmen and a wicket keeper who is usually good at batting as well. The bowlers take it in turn, they bowl an 'over'* and then let somebody else have an over, and then it's back to them.
* An over is 6 balls. A couple more terms you may here are 'dot balls' which is a bowl where no runs are scored off it, or a 'maiden' which is an entire over without any runs being gained.

England vs the West Indies now is a "test match" which is very different to a one day match. A test match lasts 5 days, it starts with one team batting and one bowling/fielding obviously and they play until all 10 batsmen are out, then the team which was batting bowls/fields and try to get the other side out for a smaller amount of runs then they had gained. However this isn't the end, in a test match they do this again, so each side has two turns batting and two turns bowling/fielding.

In this match the first innings has been completed for each side, and England who had betted first are having their second go, we got more runs then they did in the first innings, so we have the advantage now, hopefully we'll win.

Hope this helps clear things up, if you have more questions just ask, and sorry about any typos, can't be bothered to check for spelling mistakes.
I'm too lazy to say it again, so I found an old thread and copied what I had written before to somebody asking me about the rules of cricket; hope it helps to clear up the confusion.

Oh didn't know that

But you do get some peopel supporting foreign teams to that of their own nationality. My uncle supports Chelsea but he's from Scotland. At least he's different from supporting either Rangers or Celtic

Does anyone find it ironic that there's a Swiss team competing in beach volleyball ?
I wonder if there are any competitors from landlocked countries with no coast etc who are participating in sailing for example...
