Is my assignment badly designed?

I am currently studying for a PGCE and have been informed by my mentors that my 3,500-word assignment is not enough words for a master essay. That was badly designed before they joined the university and we kind of have to put up with it.

Someone I met at my placement said she completed her masters in History all her assignments were at least 5,000 words. So is a 3,500 word a strange amount for a masters essay/assignment?

There should be some formal written guidance on the required length, formatting etc for a masters thesis, do you have that ? 3500 words does sound very light BTW.

I've seen posts on TSR along the lines of 'I Hate My Sister', or 'My Is My Mother Such A *****' which approach 3500 words. Check the requirements of your course, as Mr W says.

Are you mixing up 'Masters' (which in your case would be an M.Ed.) with 'masters level' (which is a PGCE, i.e. Level 7)? If so, and this piece of work is just coursework for your PGCE, then 3500 words isn't unexpectedly short.

As others here have said, I would check the assignment brief and/or course handbook. It should state the required essay length but, if it doesn't, ask your tutors for clarification.

For my MA (in English Literature), my Masters thesis (i.e., my final assessment) was 15,000 words plus bibliography & citations. However my module assignments prior too that were between 3,000 - 4,000 words (plus bibliography & citations). So whilst 3,500 words sounds a bit short for a final thesis/dissertation at MA level, it's not necessarily to short for a postgraduate-level assignment.

Different courses have different criteria (as do different universities!) so just because your mentors wrote longer essays on their courses doesn't necessarily mean what you're doing is wrong. The golden rule with these things is to always double-check and seek clarification if you're unsure

I did at least two 3000 worders when I did my PGCE.
