Good evening Tia,

It is wonderful to hear you are considering UCLan for your degree! Are you referring to our Nursing with Registered Nurse (Children and Young People) BSc? I'd be happy to provide some benefits to studying this course with us.

The course:
1. Our programme is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
2. UCLan has the highest independent quality assessment by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education for the design, content and management of our curricula, student achievement and standards of teaching.
3. 80% face-to-face, 20% online.
4. Taught by many academic staff who are not only registered nurse teachers, but also hold dual professional nursing registration and work withing the clinical setting when not teaching - allows them to maintain clinical competence, provide you with up-to-date information and high quality support.

Placements:
1. One of the largest providers of healthcare education in the North West region and have developed close links with healthcare providers across the whole of the central Lancashire area including NHS trusts across Preston and Fylde Coast, Fleetwood and Blackpool, Blackburn, Burnley, Wigan, Chorley, Southport and Ormskirk, and many more.
2. We can arrange placements with private healthcare providers, independent and voluntary sector organisations and these learning environments provide our students with a unique insight into how healthcare is managed in all settings, not just within the NHS.
3. Each area has a dedicated member of academic staff attached to the placement, so that you may access support and advice. They work in close contact to enable you to feel confident that your practice experiences are supported throughout.
4. As part of your clinical experiences you can expect to work alongside a practice supervisor and practice assessor who will support your learning journey throughout each placement area. As a result there is no part-time route for the BSc Nursing as all students are expected to work closely with their practice assessors which may entail a range of different shift patterns throughout the year.

Tutor Support
1. As above, you will have a 'link' tutor who will support you and stay in contact with you throughout your placement. You can go to them for advice, if you have concerns, etc.
2. Our tutors are welcoming, friendly and always willing to help. If you have any concerns or need help, they are always willing to listen and will help where they can (or pinpoint the person/people who can help you).
3. You can book appointments with your tutors to access individual support where needed. This can be for assignments and theory, your general feelings of the course or about placement.

Holidays:
1. As you are required to complete a set placement, your holidays will be different to those on other courses. Please feel free to chat with one of our current Child Nursing students on our Ask a Student page. Regina is a current 3rd year student and is available to have a chat about the course, placement and holidays, etc.

Parking:
1. There are some specific criteria for students to meet if you want to apply for a parking permit during your studies. It’s probably best if you contact the Car Parking team initially, as you will be able to ask any questions there directly. Email: [email protected]
2. Online applications for a permit open before the start of each semester
3. Preston Campus - The University Campus Map shows all parking options for our Preston Campus, including for bikes and motorbikes. Short stay pay and display parking is available at Harrington Car Park and Victoria Two Car Park. Purchase your tickets from nearby machines. You can find details of other city centre pay and display car parks on the Preston City Council website.
4. Burnley Campus - If you are studying at our Victoria Mill and Princess Way campuses, you can apply for a parking permit by completing our student parking application form and selecting Burnley. You can find details of car parks for our Burnley Campus on the Council website.

I hope this answers most of your questions and provides a good insight into studying Child Nursing at UCLan. We sincerely hope you choose to study with us!

Best wishes,

Chelsea

Hey @Crystal2609,

It's great to see that you are looking to study child nursing at university and are considering UCLan for this degree! 😊

There are some brilliant points mentioned by Chelsea one of our students above, but if you do have any questions about the course or life here as a UCLan student, I'd be more than happy to help. 😊

Have you managed to attend an open day or campus tour yet? If you can, I'd definitely recommend coming along as this will be the best way for you to get a feel for campus and what life will be like as a student. Our campus tours are student led and you can ask any questions you have during the tour whilst exploring our facilities and accommodations options to get a true insight into student life.

All the best,
Sarah

There's been a lot of changes within the schools at UCLan, so i'm not sure if nursing now falls under social work, health and sport. If it does, the school is amazing. Its very supportive and dedicated to students. ,Ive also been under a different school and they were great too, but when youve worked within a care profession, tutors seem to be caring and committed in nature. So the tutoring side i would not worry about.

Parking can be a nightmare, but there's a fairly big and cheap one near where the old BnQ used to be. Holidays for nursing are different to other courses, but when i considered it, from what i heard you got Christmas off and some of the summer, but the courses run all year. When i enquired at Edgehill, i liked how responsive they were and how much they wanted to help at the beginning, but the placements are very scattered right up to Cheshire and beyond. I think a good gauge of tutor commitment is to find an email contact on the websites and ask your questions, and see if they respond. It'll give you an idea of how responsive people are. Certain universities are terrible, others are great.

I personally would never chose to study at UCLan again, but that was my experience with support services after trauma and my daughters death. They made a horrendous situation a million times worse. So its something to bare in mind if you think you'll ever need extra support whilst you are there.

I've got an offer to uclan Preston and edge hill for both child nursing as previously mentioned, but it's coming close to the deadline and I really don't know which to choose. I know alot of ppl going to edgehill doing nursing, however edge hill is further away (2 trains for edge hill = 1hour+ whereas uclan is 14min on train) I just wanna know what I'll be taught in each if you get taught as the college im in rn doesn't teach us just reads of a PowerPoint if they can be bothered and they don't mark it on time plus staff issues. I do not wanna make the wrong choice.

Have you looked at the placement maps for both? Its not just the uni that you need to be able to travel too, but the placements as they make up half of the study time. If its 14 minutes to uclan, and an hour to Edgehill, then you must be closer to uclan. Also, remember trains are often delayed and cancelled, so you need to allow time for that too.

Edgehill placements run all the way up to Cheshire and beyond. I looked into children's nursing there, and that's what made it unfeasible. You will be doing 12 hour shifts, and with travel times, your days will be very long. Plus if youve any other commitments such as children, pets or caring responsibilities, you have to be able to juggle everything. So id pick the easiest option, because you'll meet new people where ever you go.

Plus, i think most universities will use power points, but a decent lecturer would not just read of it. It should be there as bullet points to remind a lecturer and the class what was discussed, etc. Sort of like a visual aid. Lecturing at university is generally at a much higher level than college, with experienced professionals and academics. But then there is always the dodgy lecturer within a university, just as there will be excellent ones in colleges. There are feedback forums for students when things arent great, and ways things can be improved if you did face a dodgy lecturer at any university you pick.
