Do you mind explaining Leicester’s scoring system… I’m really confused?

For GCSE's its done as: 8/9 = 4 points 7 = 3 points 6 = 2 points 5 = 1 point
A levels achieved: A/A* = 5 points B = 4 points C = 3 points

GCSE's and A levels achieved are out of a maximum 32 points total

As for the UCAT it is scored for every 50 points eg. 2600 = 26 points 2790 = 27.5 points etc
that's out of a total 32 also so overall score is out of 64

Oh I get it now, thanks allot. What do you think will be a safe score for applicants outside the midlands? I’m speculating but let’s say I get a very average UCAT (2600) my total points would be 55 but hopefully I get a higher UCAT

But now 9s score 4 and 8s 3? https://le.ac.uk/-/media/uol/docs/academic-departments/medicine/study-regulations/2024-scoring-of-application-a100-final.pdf

This document is for A100, we are talking about A199 (foundation year)

I've looked through last years thread and people got interviews with 55 so hopefully you smash the UCAT and i guess we'll see from there.

Ok understood!

They have how to score on this document. They use GCSE'S, UCAT and achieved grades (if reapplying)

The scoring document you posted is for the foundation A199 course

The A100 standard medicine course is as below:
Which is similar but contains differences in a few things.

The main changes for 2024 A100 were:

1: 8/9s no longer both score 4 points. Instead 9s score 4 and 8s score 3
2: standard offer is now A*AA instead of AAA
3: an A*/A at EPQ reduces standard offer from A*AA to AAA
4: Each achieved A* a-level grade after the first gets an extra academic point to maximum 32/32 points. (Ie A*A*A = 1 extra point, A*A*A* = 2 extra points) Previously each achieved A* grade gave an extra point.

Bit of a dilemma here (Northern Ireland student) ….

1st choice is QUB Belfast and unless they drastically change their entry for 2024 intake I should get an interview but really don’t know where else to apply to as UCAT score was very average:

10A* GCSE
A*A*A* predicted A levels (already sat AS level in all 3 and achieved nearly full marks)
UCAT 2590 B3

Had some disruption while doing UCAT - incident was raised by the test centre but other than noting this it won’t make much difference. Had been doing much better in practice.

PS should be reasonably strong with good work experience etc

Any ideas? Thank you 😊

Options limited as you realise:

Sunderland (need to not be in the bottom 2 deciles and 200+hrs of work experience)

Keele 15/25 on personal statement

Lincoln possibly but your SJT I think loses you points so check their scoring system. Can’t remember it off the top of my head

You may be better suited to BMAT (oxbridge, imperial, UCL, BSMS, Lancaster) gieven your otherwise high academics

I have collated options as below:

Hey, sorry could u explain how u calculated KCL’s cutoff estimate 😅 Basically i got 2840 b2 in my ucat today so idk if that will be good enough for KCL (for background I got 10 9s and 1 8 in eng lit for gcses and my prediction is 3A*s with achieved A* in EPQ). Also u mentioned how Bart’s calculates it with ucat and ucas tariff (which will be 196 for me bc of epq as well?) so would my ucat be good for barts too? Thanks xx

Hey sure,

KCL
-UCAT: KCL percentile
-SJT: Band 1: 10 points Band 2: 5 points Bands 3 and 4: 0 points
-GCSEs: 8 8/9s: 40 points 7 8/9s: 30 points 6 8/9s: 20 points

rough guess is 2840 will be safe enough to keep you in 9th decile nationally this year, possibly 7th or 8th for kings so rough conservative estimate 70 points, 40 for gcses and 5 for sjt for a total of 115. don't know cutoff but from the attached foi, seems like bar a few exceptions-possibly explained by contextual, elite athlete or guaranteed interview(?) offer holders generally held 100+ points

BARTS
-only calculates tariff from 3 A levels so max is 168, cutoff was 2880 total combined so 2720 UCAT for those with minimum tariff of 160 (A*A*A), Barts should be a good option for you x

OTHER
-Exeter: 3A*s and high UCAT

Hi, can anybody advise how Manchester treats SJT for dentistry?
I have 2840 but band 3.
I know they don't prioritise band 3.
Would they score me down over somebody with a lower UCAT score but higher SJT or is it for prioritising within same decile?
Also, any guesses whether UCAT cutoff for Bristol would be higher or lower than last year? For dentistry, it was 2750 for 2022 but 2850 for 2023.

Hey, sorry this is the medicine thread so not sure if youd get the most accurate advice here. For medicine Manchester rejects bands 3 and 4 but may be different for dentistry

top 2 deciles generally trend upwards, but fluctuate. Many factors make it difficult to say with any certainty. Again, not sure you'll find the dentistry knowledge on this particular thread

Could also have a look at Kent? Read https://kmms.ac.uk/entry-requirements-2024/ . You may have a feel for school if in group A. Otherwise group C could work out.

I got 3000 band 2 in my UCAT and have achieved A*'s in both bio and maths and an A in chem and I am doing a gap year. My GCSE's are: 998877777 but were teacher given because of covid and my choices are:
-Bristol/Kings
-Barts
-Sheffield
-Leicester for medicine. What does anyone think?

Just a follow up - look at v helpful post https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showpost.php?p=98755415&postcount=576 on kings scoring - reinforces bristol over kings

Hi, I hope this is the right place for this but I was hoping to get some advice on where to apply for medicine this year as I am a bit conflicted!!
Predicted grades : A*AA (A* in economics, AA in bio and chem)
UCAT : 2750 B1 (VR 630, DM 720, QR 650 and AR 750)
GCSEs : 10 grade 9s, 1 grade 8
Work experience : A fair amount - Hospital, GP surgery, volunteering at a care home and a homework club
No contextual/WP
I've been researching where to apply strategically and was thinking Notts as my score is 136. HYMS was another one I was considering, my score would either be 77 or 81 depending on where the deciles fall this year. Plymouth I thought could be a slightly safer option as cutoff was 2680, and maybe SGUL as cutoff was 2630? Leicester was on my list but they want the A* in bio or chem, and since my predicted A* was in economics I wasn't sure if that would put me at a disadvantage? Any advice if anyone has any ideas of unis that I would get an interview at would be really appreciated, thank you!!

Hey well done on your stats!

nottinghams cutoff last year (2023 entry) was 129 so great choice

hyms cutoff was 77 so borderline but May be ok with gcse grade deflation? Much safer options though in my opinion unless you really fancy it

plymouth is a good shout, as is sgul

leicester you’d be considered by your offer would include an A* in bio or chem. it won’t disadvantaged for interview selection however. Your score is 58.5 if your 8 is in maths, bio, chem or English language. It’s 59.5 (2023 entry cutoff) if not. Again same sentiment as advice given on hyms. You could chose one but I wouldn’t go for both x
