Yes, a PhD in the social sciences/humanities is by itself not enough to get you into academia (not even postdocs in post-92s), and is next to worthless in the job market outside of academia.

I’ve accepted an unconditional offer for an MA course that is very specific and exactly what I want.
I’m having second thoughts because the University is not a prestigious institution and I’ll admit my ego wants to go to a more prestigious University.

Any thoughts or comments?

Thanks

Hi Bunzi,

I think you just need to look at your course and decide if it really is the one you want to do. Compare it to a few others, look in as much detail as you can about the course, go to any open days that are available. It’s the course that will make you the most happy after all.

The main thing is, you might like the University because of its status but you could end up disliking the course, your classmates attitudes, or the environment of the University itself.

I understand that a lot of people would love to say “I went to Cambridge University” for example, but my advice is: Choose the course you really want to do because it’s what you want to do, and go to the University that you like because you feel comfortable there, it makes you feel good and it inspires you - not because it will sound good on paper or to others. If you visit the University and love it, fair enough - enjoy!

But the worst thing when you’re at University is being there because it sounds good, but you’re not happy and down in yourself while you’re there. Mental health is important ☺️

I am sure you will make a good decision! Good Luck!

Thank you for your kind response. The course is definitely 100% what I want. I’m just a little caught up I’m not being at a prestigious institution.
