Fitting in at Exeter

I’ve had all my offers from my unis. (Exeter/Lancaster/Nottingham/Newcastle/Northumbria)

Exeter was my favourite place and campus out of all of them, however I’ve heard that that there is a stereotype of private school people from Surrey.

I’m from Harrogate up north so I was wondering if I would fit in and if there were any other people from the north that went to Exeter?

There are people from all over at Exeter but there are certainly more kids there from independent schools than there will be at the other universities on your list. The proportion of independent school students there is very high. It's also predominantly white.
Hiya, congratulations on your offers, that's amazing!

There are a variety of students at Exeter, there are quite a lot of private school students, but there are also a lot of state school students (including myself). The majority of my housemates come from state schools, and even the ones who went to private schools, I would not have known as they honestly didn't seem any different! Personally I haven't had any negative experiences with private school students, and I can't really tell / don't pay attention to what type of school people went to, most people just want to make friends! I wouldn't pick the university based on this, just choose whichever university you prefer, you'll fit in wherever you go

I hope this has helped, please don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions!

There are plenty of people who went there from the comps I used to teach in. One of my ex-students has friends from Sheffield and Liverpool - you will be fine.
You will find private school students from Surrey at every uni ...

I've posted links and yes, higher than Oxbridge. But also nobody mentioned Oxbridge.

Exeter has disproportionate numbers of independent school students compared to the number in the general population. Of course there are still plenty of state school kids but there are lots from private schools and lots of the state school kids are from grammars.
All Russell Group universities have their fair share of former private school students, Exeter is no different. They will also worry about fitting in. Similarly there will be plenty of former state school students who will have exactly the same worries as you. There may be the occasional jerk from either private or state school as in any setting but most former private school students will also be absolutely fine. You will find your niche very easily, don't worry.

Why are you anon? The table is ethnicity!
(edited 2 years ago)
I can be anon if I want to be. And in any event what would it matter if I wasn't given that the site uses random user names? You still wouldn't know who I am.

There are two graphs. One shows Independent school intake and one shows ethnicity. This is because I said Exeter has more independent schools than the others listed by the OP and I also said Exeter is predominantly white.

I have nothing against Exeter. It's a University I have close links with.

No source or date ...

Let's see what the Sutton Trust say - you are scaremongering

So do MOST RG unis - see my proper date - yours has no source

I like Exeter too. I was just trying to be helpful and answer the OP's question.
Yours is from 2016..

That was supposed to be addressed to Mutley

Anyway I'm not here to argue, I just answered the OP's question. Out of those universities listed Exeter has a higher proportion of independent school kids. Nobody mentioned Oxbridge anyway and the landscape has changed since 2016. I have nothing against Exeter at all (I have close links with them and think its a great university) and I have nothing against independent school kids and so the "scaremongering" comment is bizarre. Independent school kids are not a bad thing per se, they have no choice in the matter, their parents make the decision as to which school to send them to.

Please spell my name properly ... yours have NO source or date ... the last few years because of the 'cheating/grade inflation' at private schools with CAGs/TAGS cannot be considered. Please post data with a source and date

I also love proper data with a source and date

Why anon?
I’m a parent in Plymouth, and Exeter is a really popular university with students in the south west. A significant proportion of my daughter’s friends are there, and are very happy.
Why are you even arguing? Your own data backs up my statement that Exeter has more independent school kids than the other universities the OP listed!

It's somewhat like you want to argue for the sake of it..
