Most is single sex but some is mixed. Endcliffe is the place to be really. If you look on the Sheffield forum there's a few threads on there already that explain it all.

Or try private accomodation, lol
Okay, ill try and break this down for you a bit.
Sheffield has two locations where there is accomodation. The first is City & Central and the second is Endcliffe Village. You can find out all about these on the Sheffield Accomodation website so I suggest you have a look at the different types available.

Most of the stuff in Endcliffe is single sex at the moment but they are slowly moving towards more mixed flats. I'd say about 80% of it is single sex and a further 20 is mixed.
Trust me living single sex is not as bad as you'd think, I love my flat to bits and am kind of glad I just roll around in my PJ's and not worry. You end up getting close to lots of the single sex boy flats as well and so it all evens out in the end.

I personally think that Endcliffe has a better atmosphere, as its a very lively place. I know lots of people in City and Central regret not picking it to be fair.

If you have any more questions fire away!!

It does depend on the accomodation but in most of the new single sex flats its mainly flats of single sex with some mixed too. Which means the other people on the floor/floor below are often the opposite sex if you know what I mean.

I wasn't too keen when I found out I was single sex, but it actually turned out a bit of a blessing really as we ended up having to meet guys and made more of an effort with our male flat neighbours. Some of the mixed flats have ended up keeping themselves to themselves a bit more as they have less of a reason to mingle.

Molly, first of all thanks for all the info you have provided. But I was wondering how easy it is to get the accommodation you want? I.e if you say you want Endcliffe will you get it? Sorry if you can't answer this question I know it is a bit silly but yeah...

If you say what site you want, you are pretty much guarenteed to get that. As in if you want Endcliffe, you probably will get it.
Its the same for Catered, as if you want that you will getit. Apart from that you can never be 100% sure, but the accomodation tend to be quite good when it comes to this sort of thing and most people are quite happy with where they end up.
There is a chance to refuse the first option of housing they give you too. For example I know someone that was offered a Self-Catered house first year, turned it down and then got put into Birchen.

OK, cheers!

One other thing, do students at Sheffield (in general) spend most of their nights at the students union/hall bars or do most people go into the city quite a lot?
I don't know about other people but I tend to go to at least one night a week at the Union, go to the Halls bar about once or twice a week, and then I'll probs go into town about twice.

Its a mixture of both really, and the Union actually puts on pretty good nights compared to most places. You see alot of Hallam students coming to our Union for example and I think thats a good sign.

not true... tapton is full of all the people who didnt get their 1st choice accommodation... so you might easily be one of the 400 students who end up there.

Actually the majority of Tapton is Insurance and Clearing, along with Erasmus/Exchange students.
There are very few people there who met their Firm offers.

To be honest it makes no difference whether it's single sex or not.
They'll be drama anyway if my block is anything to go by!

Single sex in halls normally means single-sex flats. There are still members of the opposite sex on the same floor. There are also a few flats which are mixed, when they run out of space. Don't worry - if it's action you're looking for, it's available if you want it!

Not sure if that is entirely correct. I know that there are a lot of Dental students in Tapton, as well as a few people on my course who all had Sheffield as their firm choice.

Really? Are you sure they didnt apply for accomodation late? They did not officially announce that Tapton would remain open until July this year so its unlikely they would have placed many firms there.

What's the choice and quality of food like in catered accomodation? Thanks
Does anyone know if you can have your own TV's in your bedroom in the Endcliffe? I looked round a room but didn't notice.

Edit: Never mind. Found it on the website.

It really depends on what accomodation you are in. I think the choice is slightly more restricted in Tapton, where there are only a few hundred people sharing a dining hall, but at the Edge there is quite a wide selection.

Whats on offer differs slightly each day (I think the menu is online somewhere) but each day they have a selection of sandwiches, hot food, pizzas salads and jacket potatos everyday which is pretty good.
Lots of people who don't have a meal card still pop over to the edge for food and things as it is nice enough to want to pay money for, always a good sign!
I've heard its much better than the majority of canteens in University accomodation.

That's good to know, thanks.
