the intenstity of sound in decibels is equal to 10 log(base 10) p^2/y^2 where y=0.0002 microbars
write this formula in a simpler form

earthquakes are recorded on a seismograph. the magnitude of an earthquake on a richter scale is given by log(base 10) (k*amplitude of the surface wave) where k is a constant

two earthquakes produse surface waves in ratio 3:1 how do their magnitudes on the richter scale differ?

10*log(10) (p^2/y^2)

when y = 0.0002,

= 10*log(10) (25000000*p^2)
= 10*log(10) (5000p)^2
= 20*log(10) (5000p)
