Some great lesser known ska-punk bands are The Hippos, Catch 22, Streetlight Manifesto, Distorted Penguins and Suburban Legends.
Punk Rock - The Living End, Brand New, Something Corporate
For rock i'd say Our Lady Peace (probably quite well known), Guano Apes.
Folk/celtic/oi punk - Dropkick Murphys, The Real Mckenzies, Flogging Molly
    That's all for now.

Obscure favourites, plus what I think are their best albums:

Neutral Milk Hotel - In An Aeroplane Over The Sea
Joanna Newsom - The Milk-eyed Mender
    I Monster - Neveroddoreven
    Buck 65 - Square
    Common - Electric Circus
    Laura Viers - Carbon Glacier
    Cinematic Orchestra - Remixes
    Third Eye Foundation - Ghost
    Pram - Dark Island

And I recommend the Back To Mine series if you're looking to hear professional artists' favourites - the Orbital ones probably best.

I remember Mark and Lard were playing Shivaree a few years back; I think Goodnight Moon was a record of the week. Drugstore are another similar band they played.

Popular in the US, but not especially well known in the UK:

    Jack Johnson
    John Mayer
    Jason Mraz
    Guster
    Ben Harper
    Gavin DeGraw
    Howie Day
Love John Mayer, Jason Mraz and Ben harper

I got their "I Oughtta shoot you in the head for making me live in this dump" (I think I got the name right) album off secondspin.com. Apart from Goodnight Moon and maybe Idiot Waltz, it's a pretty bland/boring album in my opinion. But I bought their following album for a friend's birthday. It sounded really different. I should probably give it a listen.
