I’m so glad we only did Aeneid for AS. The Heroides is so much more interesting to talk about.

Realising I don't really have any historical context for Virgil - does anyone have anything? All I've really got is that he was born a peasant, was very shy, and was drawn to tradition and the countryside.

Hey everyone  How did the exam go?

The first Aeneid XII AS marker was lovely!!! The Heroides one, less so, I thought it was a little too long, but I think I’ve done ok.

Supplementary questions for 25 marks were very nice - felt like I got all those right.

Didn’t like the 20 marker on how similar the women were - felt a little convoluted, but commented on how one could elicit sympathy through their portrayals, agency, loyalty, tied in a bit of Augustan context with Dido and Penelope, went off a bit on Briseis for not breaking free from her stereotype and having zero aspiration - though wasn’t worded the best!

I was pretty happy with Catullus AS - I also hate 76 but given I'd gone to all the effort of memorising it I wasn't mad about it coming up, and actually had a lot to say although I did start questioning my interpretation of the word "disillusionment" at one point.

As for the Virgil A2 I was a BIG FAN of the chosen extract, as it was quite near the beginning so I knew it well, and I thought there was lots to say. Again, I didn't time manage how I had expected (similarly to the prose I spent about 45mins on the AS 15-marker, 25mins on the A2 15-marker, and then 20mins on the 20-marker but it actually worked out well. Aeneid 20-marker was very nice, and the most obvious q they could have picked so no complaints there!

I believe the 20-marker was "Turnus is the centre of Virgil's interest and attention in Aeneid Book XII." Discuss. [20]
