Dress code at uni?

Hi! I'm an international student starting university this autumn and just wondering what is normal/appropriate to wear to uni in the UK? I usually dress pretty casually. Do people wear things like event t-shirts and (in summer) shorts, or would that make a bad impression? Thanks in advance!

Hi there

One of my favourite things about uni is how relaxed the dress code is. You can dress as casually or as formally as you like. Most people tend to wear tracksuits, hoodies, jeans, t shirts etc. Dress however makes you feel comfortable. If you have any other uni related questions pleas let me know!

Best wishes

Hi!

Well, there isn't any dress code, everyone just wear what makes them feel confident and comfortable except if it's related to your course e.g paramedic uniform but that is only specifically. Anyways, just dress like you usually do.

Hello Anon,

Do not worry about dress codes for university in the UK. It is as casual as you can possibly want. I just wear Hoodie, T-Shirt and Jeans/Chinos or Shorts in summer. It's really nothing to worry about.

The only time you're required to wear anything formal (at my university) is during any interviews and at graduation! Otherwise show up in whatever you want. There might be some universities around the country that want slightly smarter clothing at nightclubs or bars but that depends on location and is usually not related to the university.

Hope this helps,
Dom

Coming from someone who once went to class dressed in a maid costume and pigeon mask; wear whatever you want to class! Uni isn't some fashion show!

Hey!

I also really worried about what to wear before I started uni but actually, there was nothing to be worried about! People wear whatever they are comfortable in and you'll meet people at uni with all sorts of different unique styles and clothing types.

In general, I'd say I see students mostly wearing jeans, cargos, tracksuit bottoms, leggings with t-shirts, hoodies, jumpers and trainers or boots. When it's hot it's also fine to wear shorts, skirts, dresses and sandals  Most things are fine but you don't need to dress really really smart and I wouldn't advise wearing pyjamas - although I have seen some people do it haha

Dressing casually is perfectly fine for university in the UK. You can wear jeans, t-shirts, hoodies, and sneakers. Event t-shirts and shorts (in summer) are acceptable too. Be comfortable, but also be prepared for occasions where more formal attire might be needed. Layering is useful due to unpredictable weather. Ultimately, wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable. Enjoy your time at university!
