i got distinction in law, did anyone else assume it's just commendation for all shortlisted candidates and wrote that in their personal statements for UCAS?

Last month my colleagues and I had the pleasure of hosting a ceremony in the University of Oxford's Sheldonian Theatre. Nearly eight hundred guests - shortlisted contestants and their families and supporters - heard a speech from our Guest of Honour, Professor Pano Kanelos. Our Director, Martin Cox, announced the category winners and runners up, as well as the overall winner of the Grand Prize of the John Locke Institute's 2023 Global Essay Competition. Wait, so is Distinction equal to Commendation, or does the email specify whether or not you received a "Distinction?"

How are Commendations vs Merit weighed? I was shortlisted and got Merit, but am also seeing others who were shortlisted and received Commendation.

That's what it looks like. I submitted in the Psychology category but no updates yet. When they meant end of the month, I'm pretty sure they were subjecting themselves to Parkinson's Law 😅
