Hold off for now, you may not need it. I trialled it over Easter Y12 for maths as I was struggling a bit with mechanics. It helped a lot and I thought I might pay for membership from the start of Y13 or possibly Christmas (the price goes down in intervals as the year progresses). My mum talked to them and they gave us a £50 discount so we paid the Y13 price but got the rest of Y12 for free. I don’t know if they always give discounts if you book a call, but it is worth a try if you are willing to walk away as we were.

I doubt I will complete enough of the course to trigger the guarantee, for me it is more something to dip in and out when I have problems plus exam practice questions and papers. Like a very expensive text book - but it works for me. We had hegarty maths for GCSE, but I think Uplearn is better.

If you want to do something the summer before you start, just make sure your algebra is as good as possible.

I see they took my advice then. When I started the course, they were charging one set price no matter what time of the year that you started.

I started in January 2023 and they wanted to charge me the same price as if I’d started in august 2022 but both expire august 2023. I was going to get less time but pay the same price. Their argument was that everyone gets access to the same material which sounded extremely dumb lol

In the end I paid half the price for the course.

It seems me questioning their course costs must have got through to them, in order change the price increments based on when you start the course

Hey, I'm thinking of buying UpLearn for AQA Maths. For those who have used it. Was it any good? Since, I don't want to spend the money if it isn't worthwhile.

I bought it for edexcel A level maths 3 weeks ago and have been using it every day. ngl its pretty good. not sure about AQA but for edexcel atleast the videos are very good, they start of from the basics of a topic and slowly increases the difficoulty. I found its a lot easier compared to learning from a textbook because the textbook doesnt explain things well. also if u are having trouble understanding something you can just message a tutor and they dont typically take too long to respond. Another thing i like about it is the xp they give u after completing questions, it kinda makes revising feel like a game and more fun. Also, The videos will ask u a lot of questions inbetween, so its rlly good for testing your memmory on things.

its definetly on the pricy side but tbh i dont really think there is anything like it out there. i would say if u are a good self teacher and u are completely fine watching youtube videos/learning from the textbook, then dont buy it. But if you could do with a bit more support and structure (and you have the money ofc) then buy it.

Lmk if u have any questions about it id be happy to help out

It states I’m at a grade B right now based on what I’ve done but I’m taking my exam next year, so hopefully I should be getting A* providing I can recall all the damn formulas!!!! Hahah

The thing is that I have the money and I feel like it will be really useful for preparation for A levels as well

When does the course span too? Does it say august 2024 or 2023? You don’t want to pay a high price for a short term.

It says August 2025, 3 subjects are £900

So, £300 for two years. I think they were trying to charge me £240 Jan-Aug 2023 in the beginning but I paid £120 in the end, so it Sounds like a reasonable deal to me but I know they other some decreased discounts randomly in the beginning. You could get it cheaper

Did you try the free trial for all three subjects?

Yeah, they were quite good imo

Why pay money before trying all the excellent free Maths websites? No-one should need Uplearn with what is free out there.

Have you been set summer prep work for Maths? If not then again there's many examples on the web.

These pay-for resources are a rip-off [Maths teacher]

There are a lot of free Math resources out there but I personally find that not all of them put information across as well as this course does for me.

Some people can be too technical with their teaching methods and others just a little mind numbing. I know TLF Maths on YouTube is pretty decent and organic chemistry tutor for Maths but again, there’s other distractions and it’s hard to navigate. That’s an issue with some websites too.

Not to mention, this specific course offers 24/7 tutor support which you’d have pay a lot of money for if you wanted a private tutor. This student room is great for such occurrence’s but they can take a while to reply but I would feel a little if a burden asking every time on here lol

well that’s my approach on it anyway. I’m not sure how the other guy feels about it

Edit: I should also add the fact, that something about paying for a course makes you feel more motivated mentally than something that is free. Similar to when you buy your very first car, to someone giving you a car. Something about pride becomes a motivator

I get e-mails from studnets all the time, including in holidays - I am available every lunchtime and after school. I 'know' the student as a person and their individual strengths and weaknesses - why would anyone need uplearn if they are in a good school?

I can’t speak for the other guy but I’m an adult learner myself.

You honestly sound like a brilliant teacher. I went to a crap school and my teachers weren’t respected that well by students and in response didn’t have time for students but that’s something I would have to blame my parent for sending me to crap school but being a single uneducated woman herself, she just put me whichever was simpler for her. I could then point the blame at my nan for not being there for her but everyone has excuses.

Hence, it depends on an individual persons situation and not all of us are fortunate to have a good school and a good teacher.

I can understand your position but to go for Uplearn before the course has even started sounds a bit premature to me. About 90% of school are at least good and if we just looked at sixth form provision it's probably higher.

Uplearn is convenient way to get help when I need it. It even cues up the vids you need to watch if you get questions wrong. It is not an essential, but it works for me and I don’t mind paying for it. So far, I haven’t had to contact the tutors as I haven’t needed to, but it is good to know that extra level of help is there.

Overall my school is good and I think my maths teachers is great. He does have a life outside of school, so I don’t mind sorting issues out without his help when I can.

That was my original question to him too but if he’s keen to do well in a subject, I don’t see nothing wrong with him investing in extra resources, especially if he finds it really helpful.

It also depends on whether his parents are on his case and pushing him to do well, so he’s seeking out his best options to not let them down and if they’re paying for it too, it’s a no brainer.

That’s just one possible scenario.

It makes you think if learning online becomes a lot more convenient and superior to in person learning where you’re surrounded by annoying pupils and often some half hearted teachers, schools may eventually become obsolete.

Wow.. A lot happened whilst at work and sleeping xD. To answer everything, I understand that there are a lot of good free resources for Maths and Sciences. However, the benefit of having one website is that there is less distractions and also I know what I'm getting with the product. Furthermore, my sixth form that I will be attending is one of the best in the country. However, I really need these A* so I'm willing to put the money since i can fund it. Just want to quickly mention though after having a look at Tailored Tutors, I will buy Tailored Tutors for Maths and Chemistry then Just Physics with UpLearn. The reason is that the courses that Tailored Tutors better fits the way I learn and it is really easy to just get on with the work (Which is the main problem I have with free resources. They seem to take so much energy just to start revising and the way that some of the online teachers teach makes me zone out then I end up playing a game or something which is counter-productive. The only YT maths teacher that hasn't left me uninterested so far is The GCSE Maths Tutor. However, as inferred by the name they don't really do A-Level Content). But, I will wait until I get my GCSE results back before I invest in anything first since I'm currently just scouting out revision and learning resources before I begin my A-Levels.
