Unfortunately not. There really isn't any reading around the role of the legal adviser; in fact, there are only two books that even deal with our role, and they were written in the 1980's (and one was an unpublished dissertation).

There's nothing to stop you going to the Criminal Court nearest to you next week and observing the role of the legal adviser there - it might be worth emailing ahead, but you can still observe the court. Observing the Family Court is obviously more difficult and can't really be done, but you could always email the Family Court nearest to you and ask if it would be possible to speak to the Senior Legal Manager about the role and whether they could give you any advice.

Thank you for your response.

I followed the instructions in the job advertisement and spent nearly a week in the Criminal court at my nearest location before my interview. While I had the chance to observe a lot there, the usher in the court explained that observing in the Family court wasn't possible. Reaching out to the Senior Legal Manager via email might be worth pursuing.

Thanks again, DMS.

My understanding from my own application is you need to have completed the educational course (LPC or BPTC) before you start your training contract with HMCTS. My application, which was last year (I started my training contract in Sept 2022) said:

”Candidates can be currently studying for the appropriate qualifications at the point of application but must be able to evidence their final certification at the point of an offer being made to be able to proceed to appointment. Candidates who cannot evidence the correct certification at the point of offer will be removed from the process.”

If you’ve been made an offer but don’t think you’ll have finished the course by the time you’re due to start you definitely need to raise this ASAP.

Your checks typically take between 2-4 weeks to come through, especially the DBS, unless you're already a Civil Servant.
DMS, if you allow me a few more questions as I see you are still very active in the thread. Thank you for that.

I'm curious about the level of challenge typically associated with the probationary period for the position of TLA.

Do you have any insights or suggestions to share? I am actually quite excited about the position, but given that I'm a bit of a worrier and tend to overthink things, I do find myself quite apprehensive about getting through the probationary period:colondollar:

I know...Sounds a bit dramatic.

Could you provide any recommendations for the essential skills or maybe resources I'll need to successfully navigate the probationary period? By the way, I am thinking of choosing the Family court.

As an example, could you outline which IT skills are crucial for strong initial performance, enabling a smooth and effective transition into the role?

Thanks.

Hi johnny,

I like your enthusiasm a lot. makes me feel better about starting this role. I am super stressed out with pre-employment checks. Could you kindly break down your reasoning for choosing family court?

Don’t get fired.

That’s basically it. I can’t really help you with what’s needed for the Family Court because I haven’t done that training programme. They use a different system to the criminal courts.

All I’d say is, you’ll get a mentor. Listen to their advice, take things slowly, make sure you keep up with your training portfolio. If you’ve never done the role they don’t expect you to ace it; the want you to learn, to listen, to take in other people’s experiences and make your career your own. The six month probationary period is basically just to make sure you’re making the right progress in the right time scales.

I don't think I am a 'crime' person. I think I'll be better suited at the Family Court. No analysis as such, just gut feeling.
I'm assuming everyone received vetting update today! 25 more working days it says !
Sounds

Sounds about right really. Don't forget, vetting processes are thorough and there are, at any one time, hundreds of people going through them at various levels of vetting for different organisations. Patience is definitely a virtue if you're going to work in the court service
It is very quiet here:smile:

Update from me:

1. Right-to-work and address documentation have been checked in person.
2. DBS has been received by post.
3. I guess, my references are being checked in the background.
4. I have not received any 'separate link' for a health referral yet.

You? Anyone?

Hi,

I took my ID and Address Documents in to be checked in person last week on the Tuesday (for North East position). I also took in the DBS Certificate that I had received by post and a copy of the same was taken.

I received an update a week later (Tuesday of this week) to confirm that pre-employment checks for me had been completed and a formal contract and offer letter were being prepared to be emailed to me in due course.

You should receive an email from someone to let you know when and where to take your documents to be checked in person and then once done, hopefully it will not be long before your checks are complete.

I have had my in-person meeting with a vacancy manager for the Right to Work and address checks. Do I have to take a copy of the DBS check to them as well?

Thanks, EKathW.
Sorry, another question. When did they send your health questionnaire?

Thanks.

Sorry, I don't know whether the DBS Certificate was required. I took mine in in case and the vacancy manager took a copy, also just in case it was needed.

I believe I completed a health questionnaire when providing my pre-employment check details in the MOJ Portal. I have not been asked to complete anything further.
