What an essay crisis means to...

Students about to come up: Only three weeks to go, only six books read (cover to cover) and 1,000 words written.

First term students: Two days to go, two books on the reading list not yet read.

Second term students: 12 hours to go, hung over, but reading done.

Third term students: 12 hours to go, reading not yet started.

Second years: 4 hours to go, reading not started, can't find your mate's essay.

Third years: A week to go. Dissertation topic chosen, but not yet started. 5,000 words to write.

Second year Union hacks: -1st week, still 2 of last term's essays to go.

Third year Union hacks: It's middle of Hilary, finals in a couple of months, only 4 essays done since going on seccies back in MT last year.

Journohacks: 12 hours to go, reading done, but you've just come off a 26 hour shift in the office and hitting yourself can only keep you up for so long.

Scientists: Nothing. Absolutely nothing at all.

Any others?

I agree entirely with that comment! HELP!!!!!!!!! I need to get this problem sheet done withing the next 2hours and I have crew table in 2mins which lasts about 45mins! THIS HAS TO BE DONE TONIGHT!!! I need to have done these "theoretical exercises" by my lab tomorrow...*cries*...I have to have it done by 9pm so I can go to Kate's (F.Poste's) Bday as I promised I'll go for a short time...and I have bodyweights session at 7am tomorrow and outing on sat morning so I can't stay up late working as I need sleep (have labs all day 2moz from 10-5pm and lecture before that). :hmpf:

ARGHHH PROBLEM SHEET CRISIS!!!! You arts students just don't understand!!!! :aetsch:

essay? what essay?

Pft. Real sciences don't have essays :P *prepares for the barrage of biology textbooks*

Seriously, I can't understand how anyone can stomach an essay, nor how it can be as comprehensive as an equation or a proof. If it hasn't got an equation in it, it's merely a fluffy science.

Seriously, it's just not the same. I have 2 problem sheets and 2 essays (well, 1.5 as of this week ) to do each week. Essays take much longer and are much more stressful. Plus a crisis in problem sheet's means doing some them claiming you had some trouble. A crisis with essays means you still need to finish the damn thing.

*Loves doing an arts/science mix*

We have the best of all subjects, with essays, 4 types of problem sheets and practical write ups each week (as well as 9am lectures every morning!). Essays are easier than the problems sheets for me because you can make something up and write about what you DO know about! With problem sheets, if you don't know the answer or how to approach the question that you're much more stuck - as I'm finding at the moment.

I'd disagree with that - to me it means that my artsy friends have to stay in while the rest of us go and get pissed!

As a third year, I have one advantage. In a real crisis - like last week when, two hours before the tute, I hadn't started the reading - I can hand-write a 45-minute essay and say I'm practising for Finals.

And once they're done, they can sleep until about 3pm while you disappear to lectures and labs first thing in the morning

EXACTLY!!! I agree entirely. The thing I don't get about arts students, particularly the lawyers, is that they moan about having an essay crisis and having to hand one in by 9am the next morning! Umm, well if you hadn't stayed in bed til 2pm the other afternoon then you could have started the essay and had it done

Also I agree with Oxymoron. With problem sheets if you don't know how to do it, you can't just write anything down, it just remains blank! With essays to an extent you can always write something...even if it is copied from a book. However, you can't always find a mathematical/scientific example which you can adapt to use in a problem sheet! Plus us scientists only have a limited number of hours in the day in which to do our work! We have compulsory Labs and most lectures are pretty important. This means that often complete mornings and at least one day during the week (several if you're a chemisty) are completely written off! I have been able to do no work at all since yesterday due to compulsory labs all day today so I've lost a whole day of work! Last term I use to have lectures & tute on thurs am then have Compulsory Computing Labs on thurs, then lectures and labs on fri from 9am->5pm so I use to lose 2 whole days of work! Art students just don't understand :aetsch:

However, I do agree that those students who have both arts and science aspects (eg. Economics/PPE with problem sheets & essays) possibly do have it harder than either the scientists or the 'artists'

Don't worry you'll love it really :hello: We all complain about the workload, not being able to do it etc, but when you have one of those "Oxford" moments you know it's all worth it. For me its when I'm out on the river as the sun rises, or when I'm sitting in formal hall and I hear the 'bang' and we all stand up in our gowns as the fellows come in, or when we're in the bar at one of our "bops", or in the JCR dancing (well some people) to the Rocky Horror Show on TV after a bop, or toasting marshmellows at the Turf, or just going out to a club with about 25people from my college and knowing that everyone's looking out for everyone else, or even simply when I look out of my window in the mornings and see the sun gleaming over spires....<sighs> although I grumble about Oxford and the amount of work I have (come on, how many people at other Uni's will spend an hour on a fri eve doing some work?!) I love every other aspect...I just need to be reminded of that sometimes!

Anyways, talking of work, I'm finished for the eve, so I feel that the bar and then either Filth/Pleasure Dome is calling me! :hello:

Any particular lawyers in mind? I think you should name and shame. (Probably teamvillage you're thinking of!)

Actually I wasn't thinking of Matt and I'm not going to name and shame as there's far too many of them!

I would like to hijack this thread to say I'm having an essay crisis.

Thanks, that's all.

(3 days after deadline, 12 hours before tute, 1200 words written, all crap)

I'm having the scientist's equivalent of an essay crisis - 3 problem sheets, 2 tutorials and 7 lectures in the next 3 days.
