edexcel ial exams

if you write notes near the question will it also be marked along with the answer? can it cause you to lose marks?

Usually if you write a bit beyond the lines provided it will be marked, just make sure you don’t go into the margins where it tells you not to write. I don’t know specifically about IAL but every exam paper I’ve ever done (internal/GCSE/A level past papers) have additional answer space at the back which you should use (indicating that you’ve used it and what question number it’s for) if you have any doubt about whether your answer will be marked.
