How can I become a music teacher

I want to be a Primary School Music teacher however Im not going to do a degree in Music
as am applying to study Primary Education/Teacher training straight after year 13. Some courses offer subject specialism in Primary Music however others don’t. Upon completion of my QTS degree can I further train to specialise in music or is this not an option?

Maybe you can teach music on the side, gain experience, and then apply for jobs at schools after they see your teaching prowess. All without a degree.

You could get music board accreditation e.g. https://gb.abrsm.org/en/our-exams/diplomas/

I can only see reading has primary with music but they don’t have a music dept. Thinking music degree then pgce might be a better route?

Hi,

There's a few different routes in to teaching such as:

You could do a undergraduate in Primary Education with QTS, some courses have music modules as part of the course.

You can also do a undergraduate in Music and then do a PGCE afterwards.

But i would recommend that you go down to a few open days and speak to the lecturers as they will be able to tell you more in depth on what routes you can take, and which one may be best for you.

I've linked a few of the Primary Education course at York St John below, so that you can have a little look on what is covered on the courses.

Initial Teacher Education (QTS) | York St John University (yorksj.ac.uk)
Primary Education 5-11 BA (Hons) | York St John University (yorksj.ac.uk)
PGCE Primary School Centred | York St John University (yorksj.ac.uk)

I hope this helps!
