I am the same I don't have lab experience or a masters. I have been working in Health insurance and I am about to do a 2 day lab course for experience alongside volunterring as a first aider. I've heard it's very competitive and a lot of people may be medically trained or have a phd. but don't know until you apply!!

I agree! Will still give it a go, but trying to get some sort of experience would be helpful for me too:smile:

I am hoping to apply for biochemistry, am very nervous about the whole process as I graduated 2022 so have been out of the loop for a bit (doesn't help knowing how competitive it is also!). Trying to get my head around everything I need to prepare for applying is a little overwhelming and feel like I've forgotten something huge LOL. I currently work in retail so not exactly ideal but I do have lab experience with my undergrad and thesis, would love to be currently doing something more science related whilst we wait for applications but can't be picky about what work I get unfortunately
Hi!
I'm trying again next year. I tried this year but didn't make it as far as interview stage :frown:
I've got some patient experience and have recently started working in a relevant department at my local hospital, but experience/qualifications do not guarantee you a place. I've read accounts from other (successful) STP applicants that they got a place with little to no experience over applicants who had Masters/PhD/years of experience...so you really never know!

Hi everyone! I hope everyone is well as we get closer to the festive season and the application open date in January. I was wondering if anyone has come across any practise tests for the SJT online? I want to be prepared but the only resources I've found are asking me to pay.

Hi! The Situational Judgement Test is apparently similar to the SJT section UCAT test. If you search for UCAT SJT practice tests you can find some free samples through there. Hope this helps!

That's great thank you I'll check that out!

Hi everyone. It might be early but was hoping to start a thread for the NHS STP 2024 applicants.

Thought it would be nice for people to share what specialty people are hoping to apply for, if they have applied before and what degree(s)/experience they have.

Or if anyone myself has any hints and tips for applying that would be very much appreciated!

For myself this is my first time applying and I am hoping to apply for histopathology or heamatology and transfusion science. I graduated with a First in Biomedical Science in 2021.

Good luck everyone!

Hi I currently work in the NHS as a radiotherapist and want to apply to clinical immunology.

Hi everyone ☺️Thanks for posting this! Looking for some advice...really don't think I can actually apply sadly! I have Psychology degree and MRes Psychology...graduated from that 2018 ahah. I have a year's Nurse training but sadly dropped out due to health reasons. I'm fascinated by sleep so want to apply to the Respiratory and Sleep programme, I have research experience and a background in sleep, though nothing clinical. Is it worth a shot? What do you think? I know it's highly competitive 🤞😂Thanks for any help!

Hey, I'm also wanting to apply to histopathology and still thinking what else would interest me. Will be waiting to see the posts once they open up. I'll be final year in Biomed now

Hi,
I am a first year in biomedical science and mine is accredited by IBMS. But I was wondering if you did a placement year, a summer internship or if you did something else? As this would help me feel more confident about applying to the NHS’s STP in a few years.

I tried to do the same last year and couldn't find any. The good news is, there will be a short sample/practice test on the Pearson VUE website nearer the time. The main thing to remember is to answer it from the point of view of a trainee scientist and not how you might respond to the situations as an individual. Good luck 👍🏻

You've presumably got nothing to lose by trying, so I say give it a try 👍🏻 It is extremely competitive, but if you apply you'll at least have some chance

Hi!

I have just graduated from Cardiff University in Neuroscience and I have gained a bit of relevant experience during my placement year and summer internship in different areas of neuroscience. I have also shadowed at a hospital within the clinical neurophysiological department and I have recently accepted a role of a clinical trial assistant within the NHS.

I am hoping to apply for the neurophysiology speciality and I am aiming to apply for the England and Wales schemes.

I applied last year but I didn't pass the SJT so hopefully I will do better this time round!

Good luck everyone and if anyone has any tips for the SJT let me know!

Hey everyone! I've just accepted a place in Nottingham for Radiation Protection and Diagnostic Radiology for 2024 (applied this year but was notified of my interview really late and missed the deadline for handing my notice in to leave before September so the school agreed to defer me to 2024).

I have a BSc in Physics from the University of Birmingham and have spent 3 years as a teacher since - I didn't have any medical experience at all apart from my final year project at university.

Hello, I also want to apply for Medical Physics. I have not decided the specialism yet and want to know about your experience of the application process. I also hold a teaching degree and want to know how you show the shift.
Thanks in advance.
Guys what are the chances of getting in without any lab experience?

Hey! There are so many relevant skills that are transferrable from teaching. They do a lot of teaching when showing other members of staff how to use equipment safely so that's directly relevant but then also things like communication skills!

The application process is tough, this was my second attempt after not receiving an interview on the first try. Demonstrate your passion for medical physics and your specialism, any relevant experience you have (I didn't have much apart from final year medical physics lab project at uni). Talk about your transferrable skills as well as referencing the NHS constitution and how you meet that criteria.

For the SJT, keep all of your answers in line with the NHS constitution and you should be okay. Be honest with your answers as it will be a true reflection on whether you are suitable for the job or not. The interviews last year were okay, just prepare what they tell you (usually specialism specific, generic science and questions about you).

Hope this helps!

I applied for STP 2023. Passed the first stage, but couldn't scale through the second stage. I hope to apply again

👋 hi do you mind telling me what the first stage was like. Looking to apply for 2024 and I have no idea how to prepare 😅

The first stage is the SJT. If you've never done one before, it's quite straight forward. Just make sure you understand the role of a clinical scientist and keep the NHS values firmly at the front of your mind when answering and you'll be golden
