Hello @jinnylamp! 😊

Congratulations on being offered a place in the Dietetics course at Herts! I’d be happy to share my experiences and insights about campus life, student diversity, study abroad options, and placements.

Campus Life and Student Diversity:
Herts offers a vibrant campus life with a diverse student body. Students from various backgrounds and cultures come together, creating an enriching and inclusive environment. There are numerous clubs and societies to join, catering to a wide range of interests. See more here. For instance, I’ve been actively involved in the Hertfordshire Ultimate Frisbee Club, which has been a fantastic way to stay active, meet new people, and build lasting friendships.

Study Abroad Options:
The Dietetics course offers various opportunities for studying abroad. These options can provide valuable international experience, exposing you to different healthcare systems and dietary practices. The university has partnerships with several institutions around the world, making it easier for students to find suitable programs that match their academic and professional goals. More info here. I have not personally taken the opportunity to do a year abroad but I have colleagues who have gone to Australia and are really enjoying the experience.

Placement Experience:
In my first year, I had the opportunity to work in a mental health unit for four weeks, shadowing various members of the multidisciplinary team. This experience gave me a comprehensive understanding of the mental health field and the role of dietitians within it. In my second year, I worked directly with community dietitians, gaining exposure to specialties such as home enteral feeding and learning disabilities. These placements have been incredibly educational, providing practical experience and helping to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.

Location and Accessibility:
UH is close to London, which is great because you get a mix of a vibrant campus environment and the excitement of the city just a short trip away. Hatfield, where the university is located, has great transport links, including a train station and buses, making it easy to get around and explore nearby towns and the countryside.

I hope this gives you a good overview of what to expect. If you have any more questions or need further details, feel free to ask!

Best regards,
Natacha
Just a quick reminder that the SFE application deadline is tomorrow (Fri 17 May) if you want to guarantee that your funding is in place for the start of your course. It doesn't matter if you have not made your firm/insurance decisions yet - the uni can be changed easily later.

Woah this is the first time I've heard that you can take a year abroad for dietetics in the UK. Do any other uni's do this? Also if I were to come to the open day that happens regularly, what would I expect?

Hello @cat_12280

As far as I know, UH is the only university in the UK that offers a year abroad for dietetics students. If committing to a full year isn't possible, or if you'd like to try a shorter experience abroad first, you can also opt for a summer school program.

If you attend an open day, you'll have the opportunity to meet me in person, since I frequently represent my course in these events 😊. I'll show you the university's facilities, including our simulation rooms and diet lab (kitchen). You'll also meet some of the lecturers who will be teaching you and get to play with some of our equipment. Each open day varies, but at the last one, prospective students fed a dummy through a nasogastric tube and conducted a virtual consultation in an inpatient setting using our VR equipment. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions to current students or speak to lecturers about any queries you might have.

I hope this answered your questions, and feel to reply if you would like to know more.

Best regards,
Natacha

Hello!

I just had a quick look for you and the next Open Days will be on 19 October and 23 November 2024. I believe this is because applications for September intake are now closed, so any new applications need to be done through the clearing process.

However, you could look into doing a campus tour which would give you a good feel for the university and accomodation facilities. Open day and events link

I'm sorry that there isn't any more open days for this academic year. Are you looking to start this September?

Thanks Natacha! Do you know if it's possible to do just one semester of study abroad instead of the full year, and if it will affect the placements? Are there limited spaces for study abroad or are all students entitled?

For the placements, are they held during the semester break and do you have to commute a long distance to the hospitals?

Also, do we have to pay for it ourselves or is funding available like student finance?

That's okay, I'm in year 12 right now so I thought it would be useful to write something interesting that I saw there for my ucas application.

I have got an interview and I was wondering if: Does anyone have any interview tips? and Does anyone have any tips on the case studies that could come up?

Hi,

In my interviews I had a case study about barriers to nutrition fulfilment in elderly patients and one on challenges of feeding in suboptimal mental health.

Where is your interview for?

Winchester

I didn’t interview there but all my interviews asked about what kind of things I had done to gain experience/insight I to the role of a dietitian anc the skills/qualities required for the role.

Good luck x

Hi @jinnylamp

You can also do one semester abroad instead of the full year. All students are entitled to go, but you will need to pick 3 different university choices to study abroad. This will not affect any of your placements, it is an extra year in your degree. See more here

My placement was divided in the following manner:
Year 1 - 4-week placement (From May until June)
Year 2 - 10-week placement (From April until June)
Year 3 - 10-week placement (From July until September)

The commute to placement depends on whether you decide to commute or rent an airbnb. Your placement can be allocated anywhere in; Bedfordshire, Cambridge, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, or Suffolk.

Best regards,
Natacha Avelar

If you're applying to uni for Dietetics/Nutrition courses for 2024 entry, introduce yourself to fellow applicants, ask questions and share your experience of applying so far:
What universities are you thinking of?
A level / BTEC / IB / Higher predicted grades
Extra curriculars
Please don't share details of interview questions on the forum - it gives those who follow you an unfair advantage.
@CamembertPaws FYI

Hi, is there any one who is doing dietetics and nutrition at Winchester Uni? I’m starting this September 😊
Five weeks to go until A level results day.

TSR provides a lot of support to students around results day so if you have any concerns or questions, or you just want to share your achievements please check in with us. You can join in now by following the A level results day countdown thread where there is a great flow chart to explain what you need to do on the big day:

What’s the campus like? Online it looks quite desolate😅
