07/10/23 My luck has been terrible lmao

Yesterday I came into the 9-5 and did finish off writing up the last 2 lectures before they happened. I must say I am getting so interested by equine medicine it is putting me in a more difficult position as to what I want to do in the future lmao, I was always set on smallies but I am growing less sure by the day. But that's a 5th year problem, I have both types of placements lined up and today got another response so my next summer is pretty much fully booked now. But I've had an issue in that yesterday I was fine and today I woke up at 6am feeling terrible, just all body pains, fever, nausea. I only managed to eat in the last couple hours. I had a house viewing in Neston at 1pm and I could barely get out of bed for that but I am hoping that will be one less stressor if the landlord agrees to let to us - the house isn't anywhere near as nice as the first one we viewed and tbh it's more expensive than I would've thought for a house on the Wirral, but nevermind we are currently desperate. My supervisor has now got back to me with some minor feedback about the questionnaire questions I can adjust quickly and has offered to Zoom again next week so hopefully things will get moving a bit more now. I just spent most of the day trying to recover but I managed to update my EMS diary with my new placements and replying to some emails. I'm hoping I can get some bits done tomorrow like start to write up next weeks' lectures but I honestly won't be able to if I feel the same as I did today so it's back to one day at a time for a bit.

09/10/23 Calm catching up day

So I was better but still quite sick yesterday and I decided to just have the day off from thinking about uni or chores or anything and just rest and relax which was nice, got plenty sleep and even started reading a fiction book which I haven't done in years and I used to really enjoy reading. Today I had a 9am which I missed as felt I wouldn't have enough time to make up my mind whether I felt good enough to come in or not (no point coming into non-compulsory lectures to just spend the entire time coughing on others) and then our next lecture was at 11am which I went into as I am feeling a lot better, then another one at 1pm. I have a lot of non-uni tasks to catch up on like I did some laundry in the morning, tidied my room (and broke a curtain my friend needed to come fix because I couldn't reach lmao) and now I have to run errands to various shops, pharmacy etc but feel once I have those out the way I can re-focus on uni work again. Between today and tomorrow I want to write up at least enough lectures to be a bit ahead before Wednesday, adjust the questionnaire properly and start on writing the introduction/methods, and if that goes well also go over the clinical skill for Thursday. Tomorrow afternoon I have booked a riding lesson at a riding school I haven't been to before which is also a rescue and have a policy of 'no kicks no whips' which I am excited to experience. I don't think I'll stay there permanently as I'm not 100% into that ideology (i.e. feel whips are sometimes necessary) but I feel having a lesson or 2 there could teach me some good things so I'm going into it open minded as I'm just interested to see how they do stuff. I have also put a holding deposit down on the property in Neston we viewed on Saturday so hopefully that will all be settled soon and that's one less stressor as currently don't like the idea of being homeless or living with people I don't get on with next year lmao. I also got another response for an equine clinical EMS placement nearish Liverpool which I asked about on a whim for 1 spare week I had in April as I'm now so much more keen on the idea of equine practice, so now I'll be extra super busy all year with placements lmao but hopefully it'll be worth it - should have 15 weeks by the start of 4th year if all goes well.
10/10/23 Successful productive day in many respects

I wasn't too well last night or this morning but I was well enough to kind of soldier through it and get loads done. First thing did a towel laundry load, went to Starbucks for about 10:30 and stayed in there for about 3 hours. I properly adjusted my research project questions, emailed them to my supervisor again and briefly started the write up, aka mostly getting my bearings with all the headings and what needs to be included and also started writing some bits of the introduction and methods but I want to chip away at that the rest of the week as it's nowhere near a good enough start yet. I also wrote up the introduction to anaesthesia lecture which I missed yesterday 9am but it was quick and then I realised there was a self-study session with notes about the anaesthesia pharmacology which was actually really useful as it was concise info from last year so I spent a while focusing on writing that up. Then I came home, did a bedding laundry load, had lunch and I went to the new riding school lesson. I must say I was quite disappointed as I basically did 4 laps of trot in the entire half an hour session and nothing else as 'the horse just doesn't like cantering so not worth trying', I didn't really learn anything that great but they did say they'd put me on a more willing horse next time so I may give it another go in a couple weeks but don't think I will bother past that unless it's suddenly amazing. At least it is quite a good rescue for a good cause so I don't feel too terrible giving them the lesson money even if I didn't exactly get much out of it lol.

But anyway then I came home, had dinner and now I've just finished another study session where I wrote up the other 2 anaesthetic lectures from yesterday (but they are all pretty much repeating the same info from the self study session so was quick) and went through slides for another anaesthetic self-study session timetabled for tomorrow but it was more reflection questions and I think there is a seminar on this on Friday too. I then decided to do some actual formal revision as I felt in the mood to make summaries of the anaesthetic stages and pharmacology which I can put up around my room, although now I've just found I have no pins or blue tack lmao so actually putting them up may have to wait. So overall I feel I've done quite a bit both in terms of uni work and life-ing so will relax for the rest of the evening. Tomorrow I have a 9-11 private study session which was from the slides I went over today instead and 11-1 it is timetabled as an online seminar but I think it is actually a private study where I could do the equine certification task, which I probably will aim to do during that time. I also have a blood test at 1:30 and then a meeting with my supervisor at 2:30 to finalise the questionnaire and then send off the ethical approval hopefully, so I'm going to have to chug water all morning to make sure my veins actually behave so I can get back in time haha. I also need to go over the suturing 2 clinical skill at some point tomorrow as I will be doing that on Thursday, and the second part of that session is virtual cases again but I'm a bit confused as there was only 2 last time and they both took like 10 min to go through as a group with full discussion so not sure what they want us to do exactly. I'm also at the point where I want to start actually making my revision summary tables again as I'm a bit more settled back into the uni routine now and don't want to leave revision last min, but I do also prefer to make the tables a bit after my initial write up and the lecture happening so it works out. I'm not quite sure how to organise the MOD topic as it is a bit all over the place and now there is no NSF and I think pathology now replaces going through the body systems, but I'm sure I'll figure it out - it's not essential for me to start this week if things come up again but it'd be nice so I'm not snowed over later.
11/10/23 Research project stress has really kicked in today

So I ended up having a lie in today as I basically had nothing official on and I'm still a bit ill, but seeing as yesterday was super productive I didn't mind. I went for my blood test (veins behaved today) and then had my research project supervisor meeting which went well just adjusting very minor bits of the questions. But then he told me to do the ethical approval form, which this whole time I've been told (maybe wrongly?) that the supervisor is entirely responsible for filling out and submitting. So cue a lot of stress, probably about an hour to actually find the bloody right form and another hour to fill it out to best of my ability but honestly had no clue for most of it. So sent it back to the supervisor and thankfully he has filled in the blanks but has told me to submit it. I have just done that, I don't even know if I did it to the right place but hopefully I'll find out sooner rather than later. This has given me a giant headache so I think I'll just leave doing anything else today and accept the project moving forward a bit more as a win. I'll have to get up early tomorrow to read and watch videos on the clinical skill ahead of tomorrow's session at 11am but hopefully should be ok, I can formally write it up after as I have the rest of the day free. I also got a bit of a kick to the teeth this morning as got an attendance email saying I haven't been attending enough compulsory sessions in the first fortnight, when the only ones I missed was the first day as I was vomiting every 10 minutes and lost my phone, card etc and I did put in an approved absence form. I think it is just an automated email due to that and my tutor who was cc'd in said not to worry and arranged a meeting for next week, but it did just add quite a bit of unnecessary stress lol and I felt bad as I had actually been making an effort to go into most non-compulosry lectures too.
12/10/23 Nice little work day

I did wake up a little early to try and watch the suturing videos but decided it'll be better use to get my shoe laces and suturing kit out to revise over knot tying from year 1 and the basic suture patterns from year 2. This took about 45 ish minutes and I did have the new videos playing in the background but didn't pay enough attention to fully take them in. I went in for the clinical skills session at 11 but we didn't get much done because a) everyone was very hungover from AU night yesterday or just generally tired and b) the videos refused to load for any of us so we couldn't really do it without seeing it. But we did go through a new virtual case put up and as everyone has their own suture kits at home it's not a massive deal as we can practice by ourselves. I had lunch in the library then I got on with the horse passport task which I think used to be part of continuous assessment but it is optional this year, but I thought the practice might be good if I am looking keen on horses now, it will be marked I think. Then I wrote up the 2 farm animal therapeutics lectures for tomorrow + the suturing clinical skill officially, we only have 1 other lecture tomorrow which I think is more an intro for a seminar we'll have next week but it is not out atm so can't write it up. I also updated my PDP workbook which is essentially for tutor meetings which I'm having next week and I have been officially pardoned for the 'poor attendance' email yesterday as it was due to a system mistake. So I'm pretty much finished with everything I 'needed' to get done this week so I'll give myself the rest of today off and don't think I'll do an awful lot tomorrow besides coming into the sessions 10-4 unless the motivation strikes me to do any extras. I'll probably make writing up the introduction to my research project part of a weekend Starbucks session.
14/10/23 Unexpected long study day

Yesterday as I mentioned I mostly just focused on showing up the sessions, I did write up the morphological diagnosis lecture during the lunch break which didn't take long and I did leave the last session as I didn't feel it was benefiting me then chilled the rest of the day. Today I had a very long lie in and didn't plan to do too much, I rocked up to Starbucks at about 2:30 and just intended to do an hour on my research project then whatever I felt like doing for a little bit after that and call it a day. I did adjust my methods section and also started a couple paragraphs of my introduction so I feel I have now made a proper 'start', although obviously I'll spend many more hours adding to it and adjusting. Then I decided to write up the 2 clinical skills I have for Monday, but both of them ended up being chunky (ligation and neutering and radiographic positioning 2) so I actually ended up spending 2.5 hours writing these up and had to move to the library as Starbucks closed before I could finish the first skill. I'm currently still in the library and pretty much alone bar 1 other person lol, I'm going to pack up and go home and enjoy the evening in a few min. I have an extremely chilled week next week and pretty much all the things I 'have' to do are ideally done by Monday (so will have to do them tomorrow) like writing up the only 3 lectures and watching the clinical skills videos. But that means I'll have plenty time to work on my research project write up and start on making my revision resources again. I think tomorrow I'm going to do similar as today and just aim to do the minimum lecture writeup and video watch but if I end up doing any more so be it.

15/10/23 Not much of an exciting update

Today I had another lie in and then made myself go to the library but honestly I don't really feel motivated today even with coffee. I wrote up the 2 lectures on pain management for tomorrow and did the self-study notes on local anaesthesia blocks, but even though it didn't take all that long doing the notes dragged so I think I'll call it a day and head home. Tomorrow the 2 lectures are 9-11am and then I have a break 11-2 (slot for the self-study which I did just now) and then at 2 I have my clinical skills session. I think I'll probably go home after the lectures and watch the clinical skills videos at home but otherwise may not do too much extra as it's the day with most sessions this chilled week and tbh I don't have many pressing tasks to do anyway.
16/10/23 First fake cat spay done and even with a teacher role lol

I did come in and focus decently on the 2 morning lectures, went home for lunch and watched the videos for the 2 clinical skills. In the session we whizzed through the different radiographic positions and we had a little issue during the neutering and ligation part because no one else had looked at it prior to the session and the videos for whatever reason won't load on phones. But as I had watched the videos and made notes from the handbook I took liberty of giving a very rough step by step of how to do an ovariohysterectomy, definitely not perfect but I did remember the main bits and it meant we actually could practice something lmao, not too shabby for a first attempt at the skill imo. I think I'm going to take the rest of the evening off now.

We have a bit of an issue in the house as my housemate saw a mouse in the kitchen and last month we had found a dead mouse under a sofa. We have had an exterminator out and there is bait under the counters but clearly isn't working very well... Although I think it's just 1 mouse that must've got in when a door was open as I feel we'd have more signs if it was a family. The pet rats will need to be temporarily hidden which I think I'll just put them in my room and stay in the house until the exterminator hopefully comes and leaves, which sucks a bit as I don't work very well in my room but needs must. I'll probably do another hour or two writing up my research project and otherwise whatever the mood strikes me for.

I was hoping not haha I know everyone says that but we've genuinely had no droppings, nothing happening to food, no chewing evidence etc, wouldn't have known we had mice unless my housemate hadn't spotted one! But the pest control man came today, did say a lot of the bait left under the cupboards before had been eaten and disturbed so there's definitely been more. It's weird we've had no other signs, plus I'm worried where these mice are going when they're dying. All pest control did was refill the bait, put some other traps out and said he'll be back in 2 weeks...

17/10/23 Good balance of life-ing and progressing with the research project today

I had a bit of a lazy morning then my housemate cleaned the living room and this apparently inspired me to clean first my room, then the bathroom and then the kitchen aha. Then I felt lazy again and really hated myself when I kicked myself out of the house to force myself to do work at 5. I went to the campus Starbucks which is open til 8pm on weekdays, and with the help of a white chocolate mocha I started doing the introduction of my research project again. I ended up getting really into it and spent 3 hours (+ a library relocation) writing it up so I've done quite a bit of it now. I still need to properly write up maybe 2 paragraphs and definitely tweak up a few, but I reckon another 2-3 hours and I'll be basically as done as I can with it until I can start to write up the other sections, which may not be for a while as I am still awaiting ethical approval before I can progress more. This session did switch on my anxiety properly for the first time since going back to uni really, not sure why as I was mostly enjoying myself. Tomorrow I've got a pathology lab 10-11 and then I have my termly meeting with my tutor at 11:30, then a beauty appointment at 1:30. I will probably have an afternoon or evening work session, not sure if it'll be on the research project or some revision but I'll be happy as long as I do something tbh.
19/10/23 Taking a couple days off from studying outside uni time

Yesterday I had a good time in my pathology practical, it was good as everyone was just as clueless as each other lol all 10 of us misidentified a (split open) horse large intestine as an omasum of a ruminant and did other guesses in the dark at diagnoses which we got very wrong. I had my meeting with my tutor after, filled out the workbook thing and had my beauty appointment. Then I went to caffe Nero to do some work in and wrote up the last clinical skill of bandaging 2, I then went to the library and inteded to get some pathology revision in. But unfortunately I got some slightly worrying news from the GP about my recent bloods and I couldn't concentrate after that and I'm still quite concerned over it atm so I think it's for the best to have a little few days break. Before that I was only planning to do a little bit today anyway and have a day off tomorrow (beside going into a practical 10-12 and seminar 4-5) as I have a friend staying round from tonight. I've been working well so far and have already done more hours this month than I did in the whole of October last year so I'm not too worried with that aspect, I'd rather have a few days off than burn out.

I had a full day off with no sessions today and had booked a private riding lesson at 12. I was intending for it to be quite chilled as I'm mega unfit and just wanted to relax given the fact I'm stressed about my health atm, but the horse I had booked is not well atm and they decided to replace the sane horse I wanted with the recently broken in 4 year old they have... First 10 min he was perfect and then he decided we aren't having a chilled lesson at all, was fearing for my life, who knows how I didn't get chucked off, regained control in the last bit but I was not impressed lmao I am not confident enough to be riding a 4 year old which they know. Certainly an experience I guess!
21/10/23 Back to work after a couple days off

I think the short break from working outside uni time has helped me quite a lot and I had a good time. I went into the local anaesthetic practical yesterday and it was useful to actually go through the blocks physically and sort of get a feel for the precise areas and pressure you need to use. The seminar on anaesthetic MCQ later was a bit of waste of time imo as it was maybe 15 min and I wasn't impressed as still had to walk in the terrible rain for it, plus the powerpoint showed the answers so everyone would know when to put up their hand. I didn't actually use the powerpoint and me and my housemate actually used quite good theory to attempt the answers, and even if we didn't always get them correct our reasoning was on point so we were quite happy. It was ran by my research project supervisor actually and he kept looking dead at me whenever there was a horse question lmao, luckily since my horse vet placement my knowledge of horse vet stuff is actually pretty decent so I did get those correct - I also knew quite a bit about the limb anaesthetic blocks which I wouldn't have known if not for the placement. Today I actually managed to be very focused at home, I spent 15 min watching the bandaging 2 videos for clinical skills on Monday and then I got on with some of my summary tables. I've decided for clinical skills I will make the summary tables before each '2nd session' for each skill in the next few weeks rather than spend a block of time doing all of them. I spent 2ish hours on the pathology morphological diagnosis tables and I was using my big pathology book alongside to clarify some things so also got some extra reading in. Then spent an hour on MOD anaesthetic and analgesic tables which is a big topic atm. I haven't finished it as I feel a bit done with work now (and we still haven't done the full topic) but I'm happy with the progress. I think tomorrow I will focus on writing up next week's lectures which are out so far and possibly finish the 'so far' of the anaesthetic tables and see where I get to. Also got sent over the tenancy agreement for next year so hopefully that's all going ahead, but we are waiting for some clarifications before we sign it.

22/10/23 Successful working day

I went to Starbucks and spent about 2 hours there writing up the 4 lectures for tomorrow as they are the only ones currently out and then moved back onto my anaesthesia tables. I got hungry and didn't want to buy food out so I went home, had dinner, called my mum and then resumed work for another 2ish hours (disjointed between making beverages and talking to flatmates). But I managed to finish the 'so far' of anaesthesia tables so yay that's a lot less work for later and some good revision going over the chunky topic again. I've also surpassed not only my second year October working time but now also first year, currently on 31 hours and we still have another week and a bit of October so looking like a good improvement. Tomorrow I have a full 10-5 day with 4 lectures and a clinical skills session so I think I'll just focus on going in.

Sooo I've decided I'm going back to the GYG world for the whole of my third year (as long as I remember to update anyway) after I quite enjoyed starting a blog after I failed my 2nd year mocks. I feel posting on here holds me more accountable and makes me feel like I actually do stuff, so if this is what it takes to keep me motivated throughout the year so be it 😂

Anyone from the vet forums will more than likely recognise me as I try to be helpful on there, I do really like helping prospective applicants so anyone with questions please shout! You can comment on here too, I'll happily help. Anyone not recognising me, I am a vet student starting my third year at the University of Liverpool, I didn't get any offers the first time I applied, took a gap year and reapplied. Definitely not an all A*s student (chemistry can get lost) and overly honest, won't sugar coat that the vet degree is intense and not full of joy, first year was a train wreck and so far I've probably not done near as much work as I should've done (except back end of 2nd year) but happy to share my journey and experiences so people can relate they aren't (or won't be as a future vet student) going through it alone

I'll probably add some general info that's commonly asked about below for anyone interested

23/10/23 Rearranged plans for today but good progress made

So I woke up today to an email saying the morning biosecurity lectures are cancelled but as I was already up I decided to make use of the time. I revised my disorder of growth summary tables from last year pathology and then skimmed the neoplasia chapter of my big pathology book as we are starting that topic on Friday. I then started making tables on MOD clinical examination but didn't manage to finish as I went to clinical skills. As we only really had 1 skill to do we finished early so I went to the library and more of the lectures had been put up so I wrote up the recovery lecture for Wednesday and began to set up a self-study for a Friday seminar but decided I'll actually answer the questions a bit later so I'm not just repeating what I just read in the lectures. Then I went to the 2 afternoon lectures and stopped by the pharmacy on the way home. Then I had a big breakdown to my best friend over a recentish long distance kinda relationship that I've had going on because I decided to have the epiphany that it's not working out rn, so I broke that off and now I'm just gonna let myself be sad for the rest of the evening. But tomorrow I'm aiming to get on with writing up hopefully the rest of my research project intro as I don't have much left but I'll probably take it slow other than that.

26/10/23 Back to it after a couple horrendous days off

Luck is not on my side atm guys lol. I was intending to work on research project Tuesday but I was a big mess so decided it's a day in bed instead. On Wednesday I was quite busy and with changing plans I couldn't even get a tiny bit of work in, I got an older tattoo touched up (artist messed me about a bit with times) and then I had my first riding lesson back with the uni society. I was already really nervous because I decided to sign up to a jumping lesson and I'm properly starting with the intermediates rather than novices this time and I've had bad experiences before with people being more stuck up etc but decided I do want to progress with my riding more. Well, nevermind the lesson nerves, the drive to and from was the most traumatic part! I live down a one way road and had to stop for an e scooter going directly at me (had some choice of words out the window), 2 min later at lights a guy from a van ran over to me to let me know one of my wheels is flat. I was only 1 min from the pick up spot so stopped there instead and frantically called my dad etc, managed to pump it up and be on our way and we were only a few min late. Topped it up before we left too for good measure but on the way back on some lights an e scooter went practically under the car in front of me (totally e scooters fault as went flying past their red light without looking as we had green), and I also saw some other near misses car crash wise so not sure what was going on yesterday but it wasn't ideal! The lesson went really well though I was on one of my favourite (demon) ponies and did the highest jump I've done since 2018. And then said pony stood on my (already deformed) toe quite badly and I am now not enjoying walking and the nail will probably come off. In less than a week I had a suboptimal blood test result, had to leave a relationship, got my toe mangled, nearly experienced some horrific car crashes and got a flat tyre - I'm clearly having a great time lol.

But today I decided to get back to it a bit. I spent 2 hours in Starbucks working on my research project write up and feel I haven't really progressed much aha, mostly just added more citations and reworded a few bits so I don't feel 'done' yet. Then I had to take my dear car to a tyre service place, thankfully they found the tiniest nail in the tyre and patched it up for just £12 so not too big of a loss fortunately. I had a very early dinner and went to the library and wrote up the neoplasia lecture for tomorrow and did the seminar anaesthesia questions. I'm just about to head home though as feel that's enough and I'm going to help my housemate get ready for vet Halloween. Tomorrow I have the lecture at 9am and seminar 3-5pm which is a bit annoying but think I'll make myself do a full day on campus and probably work on either my research project or summary tables, and then it's my best friends' birthday so will be celebrating in the evening with hopefully no more mishaps aha.
