27/10/23 Managed forcing myself on campus all day

I had troubles sleeping last night and so waking up this morning was TOUGH, especially as it is such a disjointed day with just 1 non-compulsory lecture at 9am and then nothing until 3pm. But as I'd promised myself I'd go in for the 9am I did, without breakfast and very groggy but I survived and treated myself to a Greggs brunch after in the library. I did about 1.5 hours more on my research project write up so now I'm fairly happy with the introduction like I'd be happy to submit it for the draft feedback so that's out of the way now. I've sent it to a few friends to make sure it reads well and a fresh pair of eyes always sees things better so I'll probably only make some minor adjustments to it until the ethical approval. Then I got on with the clinical examination MOD summary tables, managed to finish what we've done so far on it and then I just set up some of the other PowerPoints for my summary tables as had an awkward amount of time left. I'm now packing up and heading to the anaesthesia seminar then will be celebrating friends' birthday. What I do tomorrow really depends on how I'm feeling tbh, mostly depending on whether (and if so how much) I drink tonight and also just because I don't have absolutely loads of 'critical' work to do currently so anything I do is a bonus really.

28/10/23 Recovery after Friday night kinda day

Last night I didn't even end up drinking that much but still stayed out clubbing until 3am and then stayed up til 5am with my housemates so I was completely exhausted all day and a bit hungover. I did an hour of work in bed updating my anaesthesia tables with the new lectures from last week, did a Lidl trip and think that's all I'll get done today unless I suddenly have a motivational spark, but honestly I go out very rarely for a student these days so I don't mind. Hopefully with an early night today I'll feel better tomorrow and be more productive. We have the 'long weekend' where we get a Friday and Monday off uni so we can go home coming up next week which may sound nice but they cram the 4 days pre and post so much it's actually kinda giving us more work. Next week isn't too busy in terms of new lectures etc (a lot of seminars though) but the week back we have like 13 lectures crammed into the 4 days and as I much prefer doing my notes prior to the lecture happening I'm hoping I'll be able to write up as much as I can this week but half the lectures haven't been put up yet. I don't really work well at home and also want a little bit of chill time with family plus I am working at the kennels on the Saturday and Sunday so I am hoping to get as much as I can done tomorrow-Thursday so I don't get too stressed.

29/10/23 Big lecture write-up drive today

I decided today I would write up as many lectures as I could handle and I've done a good job of it. I wrote up one of the lectures for next week (other isn't out yet), all 5 behaviour lectures for the week after (didn't take too long as concepts aren't really difficult) and now just finished 2 anaemia lectures for week after too. I'm actually quite interested in anaemia diseases in general as my old dog had IMHA (ended up getting pts) and I would love to manage animals with it one day and hopefully have some better outcomes, so I spent quite a bit longer writing up those lectures as was doing further research alongside and it is a lot of new concepts and words etc. I've ran out of steam to do any more work now but all the other lectures for the next 2 weeks aren't up yet and that was the more 'pressing' work I had to do anyway. Tomorrow I've got a pretty busy day, 9-11 clinical skills, 11-12 second lot of anaesthesia MCQs, 12-1 portfolio support session and 3-5 anaesthesia scenarios, all of which are practicals or seminars so are compulsory. Tomorrow's clinical skills session is an OSPE practice so usually that finishes within an hour so I might have a little time to do a bit of work then and later between 1-3, I think I'll try to do work in those times so I don't have to worry in the evening. I will probably try to write up lectures if any come available (I'm hoping the one for this Wednesday does) but otherwise will probably get on with summary tables.

30/10/23 Quick update before bed as I nearly forgot

Today I didn’t get as much done as I’d hoped. I started revising respiratory tables after clinical skills and during the longer lunch break I didn’t feel too well so I just went home for a little nap instead. During this time I heard back from the ethics committee about my research project and I got a couple minor things I needed to fix, so I did that ASAP and sent it back. Hoping it won’t be too long before I hear back again. Tomorrow I want to do some work on my research project and definitely write up the lecture for Wednesday and otherwise I’ll see what I feel like getting on with.

31/10/23 Some progress with research project today

I must've been very tired when updating last night as I forgot to mention I went to the river of light last evening and it was really cool. We didn't get to see it all as it shuts off at 9 and we got there pretty late but I hadn't actually seen it in previous years and really wanted to. I don't know if I'm at the point of a little burn out as I have been working much more for this time of the year than I have previously as I'm not feeling 'right' but can't place my finger on it. I will be allowing myself to have the entire long weekend free of uni work unless something urgent comes up. Had a pretty lazy day but I did some work for my research project. I decided to move the goal posts a little this week from what I initially planned. I emailed the research associate helping asking for more information on how I can access the platform I'm going to actually use as I need a login from the institute and I don't think it's readily available for undergraduates, she has replied saying she'll look into it. I thought it wouldn't hurt to get the actual questionnaire up and running on the platform in case that takes a little while, and then I can immediately begin to distribute it once I get ethical approval. I also made a Gantt chart on excel as we have to have 'evidence' for what we do weekly and that was one of the formats suggested - I don't think it was necessarily made clear enough in the beginning (as there is also a format on Teams they prefer but it's too late to start now) that we have to do things like that to score well in the 'attitude' towards the project marking bit which is worth 25%. I was a bit stressed about this and kept putting it off as I've not really used excel much at all and barely knew what a Gantt chart was, but I think I actually made a pretty decent one all things considered and it only took about an hour. I've also decided that while I obviously can't get on with writing up the rest of the project properly without results, I could brainstorm some ideas for the bits of discussion which won't change - e.g. the biases of just using certain years of Liverpool vet students, questionnaire designs etc. Hopefully this cuts down a bit of time and stress I have to spend writing up later in the term.

Unfortunately the lecture for tomorrow was only released for a couple hours yesterday and is no longer up so I haven't been able to write it up but as it is only 1 lecture it isn't a big deal - I reckon they've messed the page up accidentally trying to upload a video from yesterday or something. Tomorrow I've got lectures 11-1 and then horse riding 5:30-6:30 so I may do some work in between but tbh I have done all my 'main' things and got ahead already. Tonight I'm going to the cinema to see 5 nights at Freddy's in Southport with my housemates so hopefully will be a nice trip out.

Hi, I just thought I'd let you know that you can search for the lectures on CANVAS via the search bar, so even if the page isn't available to click on you can still manage to find them. You often have to be quite precise about what you are looking for though so it can take a little time to find the PowerPoints or PDFs. I hope that helps!

Thank you! I am aware of the search thing existing but usually don't bother because I find it such a pain to actually find stuff ahahah but will remember for next time.

01/11/23 Finally got ethical approval!

I'm so glad I didn't have to wait another 3 weeks for ethical approval after having to resubmit the forms haha. I am still waiting to find out about how to get signed up for the platform to make the questionnaire available to fill out but I don't think that part should take too long so hopefully I'll be able to start gathering responses by next week. I went to my lectures on emergencies etc earlier and then went and had some free cake from our new vet student building and now just written up the lecture frome earlier which I couldn't find. I now have to get ready for horse riding so I don't think I'll be doing much else today. Tomorrow I've got seminars 2-5 (because why not put compulsory things last thing when everyone wants to head home for time off!) and honestly I might not really do too much work before. I don't have anything I urgently need to do atm and I feel I am not yet fully burnt out but not far off so I'll let myself not do much, and then fully have Friday-Monday with no uni work. No point getting burnt out this early on in the year haha I did manage to get 47 hours of work done in October which is over double what I did last year. In the evening I desperately need to clean my room etc and then I'll be driving back home.

02/11/23 Long weekend incoming

I was a bit more willing to get some work done in bed this morning so I spent an hour doing what I could for my MOD diagnostic imaging summaries and then about 45 min on soft tissue surgery but I ran out of time to finish as I had to get ready to go to the seminars 2-5. They were quite useful anaesthesia cases and Q&A sessions. I've just had a quick dinner (saving space for when I stop for a treat takeaway on the way home, the rats appreciate their maccies/KFC chicken on road trips too) and I'm about to get started on cleaning my room, the rat room and packing etc before I head off. I've decided that apart from any urgent research project things I am fully embracing not doing any uni work, I'm not bringing any of my books etc as I want to switch off that part of my brain for a few days as feel that would do me good. So far I've only really had days off from working if it was due to being ill, really stressed or otherwise really busy so I think having a few days off that I'm fully allowing myself to have will be good. I can't fully rest as I am working at the kennels Saturday and Sunday which I'm slightly dreading with the storms and general weather but I'll be happy to get some dog time in. I probably won't do another update on here until Tuesday. Overall, first 6 weeks of third year has flown by and I'm really proud of my progress. Might not be as much as others do but it's a heck of a lot more than I would normally have done at this point and I think I've managed my mental state alongside pretty well. It's a nice feeling in some of the sessions being able to get answers right etc and actually fully understand what's going on (although obviously not in every session aha).

Sooo I've decided I'm going back to the GYG world for the whole of my third year (as long as I remember to update anyway) after I quite enjoyed starting a blog after I failed my 2nd year mocks. I feel posting on here holds me more accountable and makes me feel like I actually do stuff, so if this is what it takes to keep me motivated throughout the year so be it 😂

Anyone from the vet forums will more than likely recognise me as I try to be helpful on there, I do really like helping prospective applicants so anyone with questions please shout! You can comment on here too, I'll happily help. Anyone not recognising me, I am a vet student starting my third year at the University of Liverpool, I didn't get any offers the first time I applied, took a gap year and reapplied. Definitely not an all A*s student (chemistry can get lost) and overly honest, won't sugar coat that the vet degree is intense and not full of joy, first year was a train wreck and so far I've probably not done near as much work as I should've done (except back end of 2nd year) but happy to share my journey and experiences so people can relate they aren't (or won't be as a future vet student) going through it alone

I'll probably add some general info that's commonly asked about below for anyone interested

08/11/23 Bit of a hectic return but progressing with research project

My time off was good, the kennels weren't busy and it was nice to chat to my coworkers again. On Monday I prompted about the questionnaire platform again and I was told I can't get my own account but I can use the staff member's who is helping so I created it on there. It was fairly quick except I ran into issues as the preview function was showing 'problems' which I couldn't fix, but looking it up on google apparently the preview function is broken rather than the questionnaire. So today I made it live so I can do a little 'pilot' to make sure everything works smoothly for my supervisor and associate and sent them the link. The other thing I need to do once that is done is ask for permission to send it out to students (to ensure not too many questionnaires at the same time), but I'm hoping all this can be done by the end of the week so next week I could start advertising it and gathering responses. Lots of hoops to jump through with this research project lol. Lecture-wise I'm behind writing up but I've decided to just not worry and do things backwards to what I prefer this week as I've physically not had time to do notes before the lectures running, so I think I'll just catch up with them on Saturday or something as it won't take more than a couple hours. The lectures (especially pathology) are quite content heavy so just going to them and doing quick LO notes uses up most of my brain space atm, and as I got back late Monday I've had to do some life-ing with shopping, unpacking etc. Right now I'm off to have another blood test and then I've got horse riding 5:30-6:30. Tomorrow I've got lectures 2-5 so I may do some work in the morning but I'm not putting on loads of pressure atm as it is just that kind of week due to the long weekend and I'm sure I'll regain control by next week.

09/11/23 Big steps for the research project today - questionnaire finally live for students!

I didn't do any formal work in terms of lectures etc but this morning I got both responses from my pilot study, asked for permission to advertise to students and received it quickly so I've been trying to get the questionnaire out there initially and asking around. I've got 21 respondents so far which isn't a terrible start imo, obviously mostly third years as they're easiest for me to get but my supervisor is pushing fifth years and I'm going to start on first years properly on Tuesday as they have another questionnaire until then so don't want to clash. I had heavy lectures 2-5, so far I'm still enjoying pathology but the histology isn't nice ahaha. Tomorrow I have lectures 10-12 and then clinical skills at 3-5, I will probably stay on campus and do some work as well as print out the QR codes/posters for my questionnaire that'll hopefully help get a few more responses. I'm just happy that it can fully go ahead now aha - any 1st, 3rd or 5th year vet students at Liverpool reading this please fill it out if you see it around or PM me for the link.

Glad things are going well!! Which is more than I can say for the new format TSR.
Completely impractical to use on a phone. Hate it!!

I am also majorly not a fan. I can't update the colour of my 'goal' posts for the week which I kinda rely on to make sure I know where I'm at. It feels much more laggy. There is a post here you can complain on, but ngl doesn't seem anyone's being listened to... https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=7411831

11/11/23 Forgot to update yesterday but have been catching up well

Yesterday I went into lectures then did a bit of work before clinical skills. I did the summary table for the skill I was doing that day which was asepsis 3 which doesn't really have loads of new theory, and finished going over my summary tables for respiratory NSF from the last 2 years. Today I updated my anaesthesia + analgesia summary tables with what I think is the last part of it (triage and stabilisation) so those are all done. Then I went to Starbucks and wrote up the parasitology introduction lecture then 4 of the pathology lectures (5th isn't really a 'writing up' type lecture as is going through histopathology) which took a while as the pathology lectures are very new content heavy. Overall I am still enjoying the pathology content though, there is a LOT of new diseases and their mechanisms etc but I find that interesting so it's not really a chore - I'm not so much of a fan of the histology aspect so I intend to spend more time on that in the next week though. I think we are now back to doing fortnights on each of the systems as we've done in NSF the last 2 years but this time with pathology so I will try to push my 'extra' bits during those weeks, i.e. also reading the textbook, making my summary tables etc because it is harder to understand and if I slack on that it'll take ages to catch up (unlike for MOD and other subjects which I don't mind making the summary tables in bigger holidays if I have to). Tomorrow I think I will focus on writing up the 5 lectures for Monday so I'm not worried about being behind and getting most out of going to the lectures (I've been actually focusing fairly well in them recently which I've never achieved in previous years). I have got a few more responses from my year on the questionnaire, I'm at 30 responses overall now so not terrible and I'm not going to bother people to fill it out at the weekend. Which is good because I've been getting flashbacks to when I was checking my email every 2 min when applying to vet school but now instead with checking questionnaire responses plus the NHS app for my blood test results lol.

12/11/23 Lectures for the week written up

Today I went to Starbucks and did more than just the lectures for tomorrow because the 2 parasitology lectures didn't take very long and I'm also a bit worried about getting behind because I may need to take a break this week when I get my blood results back. If they're good I'll be stressed because I'll more than likely have to press some doctors to still refer me because it's an ongoing issue, and if they're bad then that's self-explanatory for stressing me out anyway. I also got a few first year responses to my questionnaire, one because of TSR and the others I have no clue but I'm thankful anyway ahah. Tomorrow I have lectures 10-4 so I think I'll just focus on going into those, and also try get my QR code posters put up around the vet social spaces and maybe talk to a few more people in my year about filling the questionnaire in.

Hi

Love reading your blog.

I’m a first year at RVC and starting my revision .

How do you construct your summary tables ? Are they based on the LO? Is there a certain way you right up the lectures?

Just trying to find the best way to get this all into my old brain lol

Thanks so much

Hey! Good to hear from you! I am happy to send you over a couple of my summary tables as examples if you want to PM me, I don't have a strict way I organise them as depends on the subject - if it's something I'm struggling to get proper fitting headings for I just go with 'component and explanation' for the headings. I just think it's a nice way for my brain to organise things as obviously only so much I can write down in a table so I am not just copying lectures without understanding, and I later test myself with saving a 'blank' copy and trying to rewrite it (or use a whiteboard for the same). I personally don't base it off the LOs, I just kind of choose what I seems important aha like if it's the 10th lecture on basic biosecurity or something I won't even include that. I have started making notes in lectures based on LOs where I copy and paste them then write the relevant info as the lecturer says it, but as I don't force myself to go into lectures I won't have this for every lecture and I've only started doing it to stay a little focused in lectures. When I say I 'write up' my lectures I usually try to do this before the lecture happens and I just go through the powerpoint in hand-written notes (if typing works well for you that's probably how most do it but I find I have to hand write and it doesn't take me long) but I do make sure I'm not just copying and actually understanding in my own words. I hope this makes sense and helps! There is a lot of content, if RVC is anything like Liverpool that was definitely the most 'new content thrown at you at all angles' year and it has calmed down a lot in second and third year imo.

13/11/23 A little bit of a non-productive day

I went into lectures very motivated in the morning but I found myself getting a bit too worked up waiting for my blood test results, and so I then started to feel physically unwell from this and ended up not listening by the 3rd lecture so I went home. I don't force myself into lectures as it's not my main way of learning but I have been pretty good so far this term so I'm a little disappointed but I did feel going home was for the best as I wasn't taking anything in anyway and so I felt there was no point wasting another 2 hours feeling uncomfortable. I just chilled at home and did a little bit of cleaning and feel better now it's evening so no chance of getting the results. Tomorrow is research project off day but I intend to come into campus and sit in our vet building doing work with the QR code for the survey on the back of my laptop or something. I will focus on all the tables I have to make and I hope it's going to end up being a productive day.

14/11/23 A relatively good day

I did go into campus and do work today but I had a bit of a nightmare with the vet building aha it is new properly this year but the layout is a bit intimidating. There is kind of a 'window-all-around' central room with the hallway to separate rooms being around it, and everyone in a seminar turned around as I went upstairs and I felt too scared to go all the way around looking lost lmao. I will get the posters another day but I'm still getting quite a few replies passively and honestly not doing too bad for responses. I sat in the library and focused on making my respiratory pathology tables which took a couple hours and I still need to add histopathology, but 1 my brain hurt too much by that point and 2 I felt it is better to do it alongside the books I have at home. I also made my suturing summary which was very short and then I went home. Tomorrow I've get lectures 11-1 which I'll probably go into and then I have horse riding in the evening, so I may or may not do a small task or 2 in the time in between. Still waiting for my complete blood results but I got some more back so I've been slightly less stressed about it (not really related to the issue at hand but good to know they didn't lose the sample) although my iron levels are a bit crazy, they were low in September, highest range of normal in October and now they're even lower than in September, who knows what's changing aha but it's just been noted for now as waiting for other results.
