14/11/23 A relatively good day

I did go into campus and do work today but I had a bit of a nightmare with the vet building aha it is new properly this year but the layout is a bit intimidating. There is kind of a 'window-all-around' central room with the hallway to separate rooms being around it, and everyone in a seminar turned around as I went upstairs and I felt too scared to go all the way around looking lost lmao. I will get the posters another day but I'm still getting quite a few replies passively and honestly not doing too bad for responses. I sat in the library and focused on making my respiratory pathology tables which took a couple hours and I still need to add histopathology, but 1 my brain hurt too much by that point and 2 I felt it is better to do it alongside the books I have at home. I also made my suturing summary which was very short and then I went home. Tomorrow I've get lectures 11-1 which I'll probably go into and then I have horse riding in the evening, so I may or may not do a small task or 2 in the time in between. Still waiting for my complete blood results but I got some more back so I've been slightly less stressed about it (not really related to the issue at hand but good to know they didn't lose the sample) although my iron levels are a bit crazy, they were low in September, highest range of normal in October and now they're even lower than in September, who knows what's changing aha but it's just been noted for now as waiting for other results.

If it’s any consolation I’ve had anaemia all my life. I don’t fix iron at all. You get used to it, but it’s a great excuse to eat strawberries out of season!!Along with avocados etc. You don’t have to eat spinach!!

Ooo I love the strawberry idea aha! I haven't really got a history of anaemia (and always got tested for it as I'm quite a sickly person) but they have tested my iron levels for 3 months now because in summer I had an ear infection that presented as being extremely dizzy etc and first thought was anaemia as I also have issues with my periods and stuff (actual reason why I'm waiting on blood results atm) so it made sense, but then my iron levels are also a bit all over the place so who knows. I do feel faint occasionally but it's something I can live with, I've been on supplements consistently since September so I was quite shocked it's dropped again.

15/11/23 Nice day

I went to my lectures 11-1 and focused quite well, came home and I finished off my MOD surgical principles tables. Went horse riding and again beat my 'highest jump since 2018' record on the same pony as a few weeks ago. Mind not massive for some but it was still about 70cm ish and I am terrified of cross poles lmao and I was doing little courses too, I enjoyed it despite being terrified. Tomorrow I've got the whole day off and will need to do a food shop at some point, I think I will focus on doing some work at home mostly as I've got things like practicing suturing and reading textbooks etc which I can't do out. But we'll see how it goes, I think it's pretty likely I'll also get my blood results tomorrow.

The more iron they give me the more I eliminate. I can’t fix iron in tablet form at all, and when I was younger I had extremely low blood pressure so had dizzy spells as well. Whilst I still have anaemia my blood pressure has gone up with my age!!
Hope your test results don’t show up anything nasty, and just remember that in order to make it through vet school you have to look after your health. So don’t over do things!

Oh no! I still haven't got the results back and I'm not sure why it's taking so long, usually I get them within a couple days and definitely within a week... I'm kind of hoping the results show something as I really need to get referred for my issues and if they don't then it'll be a long argument with doctors again, I wish I could get treated at a vet clinic instead lmao. The hold up could just be a backlog (although I did get all the other results back so...) but I'm wondering if it's due to the GP consulting others to see what to do if they did show something.

17/11/23 Forgot an update yesterday but been doing fairly well

Yesterday I spent a few hours going through respiratory histology and then histopathology which hurt my head but I think it has done miles for my understanding - I still don't like it and I'm not confident, but better than I was before. Today I had clinical skills at 9am and then a pathology practical at 12 so I did some work in between working on my MOD tables, I did my antibiotics ones and started behaviour ones. I don't really have plans for what work I'm going to do on the weekend as I don't have absolutely loads, other than writing up next week lectures.

18/11/23 Got some lectures written up for next week

Today I went to the (very empty) library and spent 2 hours writing up the urinary pathology lectures for next week. I did a little recap on the main bits of anatomy and physiology using my NSF tables summarising urinary from year 1 and 2 but I think I can look over it in a little more detail. I think really keeping on top of pathology within the fortnights allocated will really help me later on when it comes to revision because I do love the subject still but the idea of getting tested on it is quite scary, especially because I think it is a guaranteed subject in the OSPE this year and I don't really want to umm in front of someone for 8 min. I then wrote up the 2 parasitology lectures which are out which didn't take too long and now I've just finished off making the behaviour MOD summaries so far. I'm about to pack up and go home but I feel kinda motivated to do a little bit more so I may or may not. By the end of tomorrow I want to have written up the other 2 lectures for the week which are currently out (shouldn't take long at all) and properly revise over my urinary tables, anything else being a bit of an extra. I did also manage to meet my minimum response goals for my questionnaire (20 per year and I've exceeded with 3rd and 5th years) but my supervisor said to start analysing but keep accepting responses more passively, so I'll probably get on with that on Tuesday being the free research project day.
21/11/23 Big start on data analysis today

A few days without an update because Sunday was uneventful I just wrote up 2 more lectures, yesterday I just went into lectures 9-3. Today I dived into data analysis for my research project and tbh most of the time was me wrapping my head around things like means, medians etc and also excel - I’m not maths inclined in the slightest. But I’ve managed to get some figures on which I’ll be able to use in my discussion later on so good enough for me even though my brain hurts now. Tomorrow I’ve got lectures 9-12 but I may skip the last epidemiology lecture as it’s still not published for me to write up and tbh I feel listening to that lecture may not add much for me, especially after 2 hours of pathology. I’m then going for a beauty appointment with my friend and I’ve signed up to do a drill ride so we are practicing this week and will be filming the next. I think overall this week I may mostly focus on getting some more of my research project done as that is obviously on a deadline and I feel if I deal with that it’ll make me less stressed later. I had to pester the GP for my blood result which was normal, but that’s the outcome I didn’t want as I’ll now have to essentially throw a fit to actually get my problematic symptoms treated - last year this happened and I got a “this could just be normal for you, case closed!” despite me being very much bothered by my symptoms and them being very much abnormal. Our property management also installed a new thermostat which meant we were freezing for a few days because they decided to do that on Friday evening and only get someone to come and configure it today, so hopefully it’ll work now. This TSR update is driving me mad too as atm won’t work on my laptop and I hate typing it on my phone.

I really do not like the new TSR!! I got locked out completely on my PC as it doesn’t like Opera and half the messages written on the phone don’t submit properly. This was just fiddling for fiddling and I haven’t seen any reason for it😤😡

It's so bad, I don't know why they'd roll this out when it's not fully operational... When given feedback on their thread all we are told is basically suck it up and deal with it.

22/11/23 Not too much work done today

I was quite concentrated in the pathology lectures 9-11 which is good enough for me then I skipped a lecture to go and write up the other few that weren't out at the weekend. I did the epidemiology lecture but then my doctor called me to do a brief results discussion with next steps and I have a face to face appointment tomorrow to get some things sorted hopefully - I'm so glad this doctor seems more willing to try investigate what's wrong with me rather than the 'your bloods were fine so you're ok' approach I usually get. I was then busy the rest of the evening and I am now absolutely exhausted from my riding lesson aha. Tomorrow my doctor appointment is at 3:20 and in town which is a little inconvenient but I hopefully intend to do some work in the morning and then possibly after depending how I'm feeling. I want to get the 2 fluke lectures written up and then probably do a bit more work on my research project but that is subject to change.
23/11/23 Couple hours of pathology work today

I did end up having a change in plan as my supervisor wanted to get even more 'last call' responses on the questionnaire so I decided to hold off doing any more data analysis as now I'll have to quickly update the numbers anyway. I think I'll close responses within the next week and tbh don't think the discussion will take toooo long, and it is only for a draft submission in mid December anyway. Instead I put on a 2 hour timer on my forest app for pathology and got on with the few tasks I had for the subject, like making 'normal urinary histology' summary tables ahead of the lecture tomorrow, going over the previous 2 years of urinary tables properly and reading the respiratory pathology chapter in my book to have a little recap on what we learnt last fortnight. I then had to go to the doctor which of course overran so I didn't come home til a fair bit later in the evening and then I decided to give up on doing any more work today. It was a successful doctor visit I think though - I did feel I got thoroughly checked, got some more diagnostic tests in the works and a likely endocrinology referral, so hopefully things will move forward a bit this time. Tomorrow I have clinical skills 9-11 then lectures through til 5 but I don't think I will go to all of them. I don't overly find most standard parasitology lectures too useful to listen to which 3 of these are (because slides are detailed enough), and the behaviour lectures are quite self explanatory so I may just go into the urinary histopathology lecture and otherwise spend time doing my own work in the library, but we'll see what I feel like tomorrow.
24/11/23 An alright day

I stayed for the full time in clinical skills today as we had 2 chunky skills and then went to the library to write up the 2 fluke lectures. Then I went to the urinary histopathology lecture which was helpful and returned to the library and didn't go into the other lectures. But I did do my clinical skills tables for the week which I ideally want to do before the session but I hadn't had the time/was in the mood to do other things, but it's not too big of a deal. I also did a lot of Black Friday shopping ahah which may not seem productive but I'm actually quite happy with it as it means I've stocked up on some essentials (like shampoos, some makeup bits etc) and also sorted out all my Christmas presents so that's one less thing to worry about, I did also buy a lot of random things for myself but eh it's a treat. Not too happy HSBC has decided to be down today though it's quite an inconvenient day for it. I'm not really planning any formal work for tomorrow so we'll see what happens.

26/11/23 Good productive weekend

On Saturday I spent an hour starting my haematology MOD tables but I decided to have more time relaxing and also doing things like shopping and cleaning. Today I went to Starbucks and wrote up the majority of lectures for the next week, finished my haematology tables, done my last clinical skill for those tables and also updated my pro skills tables. So I feel it's been quite a productive week and I'm happy I've got most major things out the way already because on Thursday I'm going over to Leahurst all day for a practical session on clinical examinations, so whilst that's exciting I finally get to touch a live animal at uni again it does mean I can't do any extra work that day. Tomorrow I've got parasitology lectures 10-12 which I will go to as they're kinda revision/summary style lectures which I feel will be useful to attend, and then a 3-5 epidemiology lecture which I'm yet to write up currently as I didn't bring that notebook out with me today. But I think I will stay on campus 12-3 and I'll have time to write it up then and also maybe do a couple other tasks. I'm going to do one last push with the questionnaire tomorrow so hopefully my supervisor allows me to close it this week so I can actually get on with writing the rest of it up as I don't want to keep changing the numbers tbh.
28/11/23 Going through a bit of a setback but progressing with research project

Yesterday I started to get insane wisdom tooth pain and swelling even though they've been out for years now. I endured the first 2 lectures but then had to go home as I couldn't concentrate on anything, so I didn't get any work done yesterday apart from doing last calls on the questionnaire and emailing my supervisors. Today I closed the questionnaire to new responses and spent a few hours doing the number analysis again which has left me with a headache so I'll leave it at that today. I couldn't get a dentist appointment today (I'm not actually registered with one as it's a bit complicated) so have been told to call again tomorrow at 8am, which is a little problematic as I'm meant to be doing the final drill ride in the afternoon and on Thursday I have my Leahurst clinical exam. I am putting my health first but it sucks this had to happen now when I've got a busier week. I also got told that my health issue has been converted to an endocrinology referral now so I've got more calls to wait out for. Tomorrow I've got clinical skills 9-11 and then behaviour lectures but I was planning to skip them anyway, what I do really depends if I can get a dentist appointment and what happens with that.
02/12/23 First late post in December being a more life update than a study update isn't ideal ahah

I have been struggling quite a bit since Monday due to my wisdom tooth. I managed to get an early appointment on Wednesday, had to travel into Bootle to get seen for approx 30 seconds by a dentist just saying 'yep it's infected have some antibiotics'. Since I've been trying to just get on with life for the most part, did the drill ride on Wednesday and full day of 'clinical exams' at Leahurst on Thursday, a pathology practical yesterday but honestly I don't feel great so I haven't done any extra studying and haven't gone into lectures. I don't know if it's the infection or the antibiotics but I just don't feel 100%, I'm exhausted constantly and I have 0 appetite, I also feel the swelling etc should've gone down a lot more than it has by now. I think I'm going to wait until the antibiotic course has finished and if it hasn't improved I will be trying dentists again and potentially do an econsult to the doctor to see if they can help as I feel quite systematically unwell and I have been getting a lot of infections recently. I'm currently the perfect palpation model for medics or dentists as the side of the wisdom tooth my lymph nodes are giant and the other side is fairly normal ahah. I am going to try and get something done today as I will soon head out to Starbucks but it may not be overly impressive. I'm not too worried though as I am still quite proud of how well I've kept up + done extra tasks this term so having 1 off week isn't really terrible, and the holidays are coming up soon so if I do need to catch up with a couple things it's not a massive deal. Tbh right now my research project will be taking priority as the draft due date is coming up quickly on the 12th and I have loads of writing up to do for that whereas I can always do summary tables/less important lectures later on, but I'll try to juggle my best.

Hope you start feeling better soon, but maybe the best long term solution for the wisdom teeth is to have them taken out.

I was fully prepared to have it taken out (and ideally the other side too as I don't want them) on Wednesday but the dentist wanted nothing to do with it. I was literally in and out within 1 minute, she didn't even touch it or anything just 1 glance to say it's infected. I've been trying to get registered with an NHS dentist for months as I have certificates that make me exempt from paying for treatment but they're all full up so I've had to go through the emergency dental line to get an appointment, I can't afford to pay the private dental fees unfortunately.

Have you tried seeing someone at the hospital in Liverpool? Mine were taken out by the hospital dentist rather than a practice dentist.

I have looked into the hospital but they aren't currently accepting people unfortunately, I did apply to have them taken out at least a year ago with them but never heard back. On their website it seems that I have to go through the same emergency dental line I did on Wednesday to be seen by the hospital otherwise or be referred by a dentist. I'm not too sure though as I'd never really even heard of emergency dental lines or anything until the last week when I've been trying to work out how to get treated. One of those things you don't think about until you need it ahah.

03/12/23 Quite a productive weekend of catching up and progressing

Yesterday I went to campus Starbucks and spent a couple hours doing the tasks I didn't get round to last week, including a couple lectures and finishing off urinary pathology tables. I think I will slightly alter the way I do my pathology tables but I'll leave that as a Christmas task. Today I went to a different Starbucks and did a lecture drive writing up all the lectures that are currently up for this week (only ones on Friday aren't available yet) and now I've spent a couple hours doing creating graphs for my research project. Tbh a lot of it is crying and screaming over Excel doing dumb things but I think we're finally getting there. I think I've done what I want to do for the majority of the questions but I still have to figure out how to display my more complicated data but I've decided that's now a tomorrow problem as it's getting late ahah.
04/12/23 Biggg research project results analysis day

I went to the 2 morning lectures on haematopoietic pathology and skipped a parasitology one at 4pm because I was too into my project by that point. I have over 6 hours on the clock (Forest app) I spent on my research project today and ngl it seems like progress is slow lmao as I only managed to actually get the figures I want for all my data in the format I want them and do the brief comments on it in the results analysis section. BUT I think that is what was always going to take the most time so now I can get on with the other parts. Tomorrow I'm going to also spend a full day on this and I'll just jump right into the discussion and conclusion, depending how long that takes also finish off methods and do the short abstract but we'll see how we go. I also got the due date mixed up so it's actually 14th rather than 12th which means I can relax slightly more aha.
