:hello: Welcome to the A-level Classical Civilisation Study Group! :hello:

This is where you can chat with other students studying the same subjects as you and support each other as you head towards your exams :grouphugs:

You can post any useful tips and resources that you come across, offer support to others, share your successes, or just have moan when it gets tough!

Just remember, it’s against the site rules to ask for or offer any copyrighted papers, or to take conversations off-site to do these things. Posts that break these rules will be removed.

A few possible ice breaker questions are:
What exam board are you with?
What do you enjoy most about this subject/ course?
What area do you struggle with in this subject/ course?

Good luck with the next few months. Remember, ask for help, support where you can and together we can do this! :yeah:

ritual burial, priests, how the sacrifice works, religion at different levels (household, deme, polis, panhellenic), mysteries & cults, various places (delphi, athenian acropolis, olympia; also just asclepions in general), and so forth

I confess - am in Y12, yet to start rome, but yeah it’s up to 43BCE (second-best period of roman history imo - beaten only by augustus’s bit)

It’s definitely an interesting bunch that we’ve got, i’m a fan, just not quite my forte (though i look forward to roman republic). so far IOTB is mostly reading masses of a really really awful translation of Herodotus’ histories. i’m lucky i know i love this subject already because it would have been an easy drop if this were my first introduction to it…

Hello! I'm studying classics at a-level and am currently in Y13

The mods I do are: World of the Hero (Odyssey and Aeneid), Greek Art, and Politics of the Late Republic.
Im persuing classics at degree level and I am totally willing and able to help with anything if asked

meanwhile: My most hated activity is finding critical/scholar quotes for the epics. If anyone has a good list for the Aeneid i would be eternally grateful!!

Avēte!

yes! we do both frogs and bacchae but we call oedipus rex oedipus the king ahah same thing though
my teacher did the same she edited the questions to suit what we’ve done, we’ve only done seneca, plato and one lesson one sappho so far!
i think i was very scared to do the exam but it’s over now and i think it went well! i repeated myself a lot though but all of the questions were basically asking about the same thing so i hope i’ve done well.
wbu how are you finding L&R so far, honestly im quite scared to start ovid 😭

omg i did sappho last year and i've finished plato this year, basically at the end of ovid now. seneca we haven't started yet because my teacher's on paternity leave lol so finishing off ovid by ourselves. the exam was edited to suit us too

i was scared for L&R exam in jan because we've only learnt it this year. Sappho is easy in my opinion it's just a lot of poem/fragments to learn, you can't really paraphrase her works like odyssey/aeneid and ovid/plato you should really be quoting her in essays but she's easy to understand i think. for plato what did you guys learn? because we learnt the whole of the Symposium and then a few important pieces of Laws and the Republic and learnt about Phaedrus and the Soul.

for ovid i think you're only meant to do ars amatoria book 3? i think? but we're basically like 3 pages away from finishing that but he's so funny loll

overall, i think it's a pretty understandable topic and it's not as hard as you think to make connections between the philosophers/sappho

i do classics- and tkate greek theatre, love and relationship, iliad and aeneid

was wondering if people had any good websites for revision resources or how to revise for love and relationship as find this the heardest

A cool interactive/visual revision resource are the Assassin's Creed Discovery tours on Youtube which give you a tour of what certain places may have looked like in Ancient Greece while also giving you information. You could get the game itself (Assassin's Creed Odyssey) and walk in Ancient Greece but the videos are just as good. They have 30 episodes on a range of different things like The Acropolis, The Agora of Athens, The oracle of Delphi, Democracy in Athens etc

Hi all, just found this website (https://www.lawrencemcnally.co.uk/) that could be quite helpful. Covers Greek Art, Greek Religion, and the Odyssey as well as info on the fall of the Roman Empire, and resources for GCSE Latin and ClassCiv that could be helpful to supplement notes. Not sure if he's planning on adding more to this (seeing as there's nothing on the Aeneid, I would assume so), so it's not comprehensive.

I also only do the Odyssey out of what modules are on there, so not sure how useful the Art and Religion parts are. Likely helpful nonetheless!

oh thank you this has reassured me a lot! ive done the same plato as you, which is your favourite?
my teacher is just… a bit slow with teaching us and is never consistently in which is quit hard for us but oh well!
i also didnt realise you ad to quote sappho properly, that’ll stress me out a bit but i think as long as i have the key themes i should be okay… hopefully!
