I have applied by the January deadline but haven’t heard back yet.

Yes, I contacted him before with the research proposal and by his permission I nominated him. Btw can I Dm you?

No because there were only 3 available people in the department, but all of them had expertise a bit out of topic of my proposal. But my project fits perfectly within the overall strand, so I will be waiting for their decision.

I ended up not nominating anyone because the person I think I could work with isn’t accepting new students this year, so my application was really more of a shot in the dark

Same goes for me. The supervisor who could take me doesn’t take any PhD students this year. So let’s hope someone else will be interested 😉

TBH if you have got Distinction then it doesn't even matter if you nominate or not

Not sure when the button disappeared, but it was at around 16:30 I got the email. What course are you applying to?

Hello, smart people!

Maybe someone can ease my nerves... I applied to a DPhil programme in a field in which I have more than 5 years of professional experience, publications and a developed research proposal . Furthermore, there is also a supervisor who is interested in working with me. I graduated another Russel group uni with competitive grades and have my MSc in an interlinked subject. While it was not listed as a requirement, I have never academically studied the exact field, which I applied to. Should I be worried? From your experiences, how strict is Oxford regarding this?

Does anyone know the procedure of a DPhil committee in International Relations?

From what I've been told, they have a centralized admissions process and supervisors have limited control.

I’m pretty sure most people who apply to Oxford have excellent grades. For DPhil programmes especially, supervisory fit really does matter a lot in my opinion, but here’s hoping

That's true but it's not the case with me although my Undergrad and first post-grad marks are like High Merit and First-class Honours but my second post-grad marks are not good, I still applied due to my Research Proposal. Oxford and Cambridge are more traditionalist universities they still focus on marks a lot, but I still tried my best so let's see what happens

This is definitely true, although it depends on the subject. Some subjects will admit those with a 2:1/merit but for other a distinction is the baseline, anyone with a merit is rarely admitted and most people who get admitted will have won prizes.

Yes

So if you don't mind telling me do you also have a distinction in Postgad, the reason behind my asking this is because I don't have distinction but do have a high merit, First class and a Pass although I do have publications, research projects, and work experience. Oxford Dphil IR website does say that every application will be evaluated according to its own merits but I just feel very dicy about it. It would be very helpful to know your opinion and also have you applied to any other universities as well?

Yeah, I have a distinction. If you don't have one then that will definitely count against you, but if you've got peer-reviewed publications then maybe that will be enough to overcome it.

I just don't know if not having a distinction is a complete killer for your application.
