There are people with comparitively low GCSEs, or AS levels, but to get in you pretty much need AAA (although there are a very small number with AAB and some with AAC, ABC, and ABB (at highers)!)

Someone I know got in with 3 A*, 4 A and 3 B.
And AAAE at AS level.
They said he was the best interview they'd had in twenty years, gave him a three A offer which he missed but they let him in anyway.

Nice.
If you got an offer from Christ's College Cambridge of EE, you could still get into Cambridge even though you got ACD

Some people do, but they're exceptions and there are usually special circumstances surrounding their "low" grades.

Well I'm at oxford and got the 3 As at A level but my GCSE's werent' great by oxbridge standards (2A*, 6A, 2B and a C). I do have a friend here who got AAB but it's rare

Though like hobnob said, it's rare and I am really lucky that they took me anyway

Yeah my grades weren't great when I applied. But I did the French Baccalaureate, so I had to do about 10 subjects, and I did have very good to OK grades in the relevant subjects (languages, literature, history) - the really **** ones were maths and physics. My offer still required me to do very well accross the board in the exams though, meaning I had to catch up on my bad subjects.

Oh I am sorry, your majesty!
My friend has just started Cambridge having got ABB in her A-levels...I suspect they loved her at interview.
I have AAABcc at A-level... so I did meet the entry requirements, but all the same, I'm not a "straight A" student by any stretch. My GCSEs were quite decent though, and I did get close to full UMS in the three A-grade A-levels, so I guess maybe that did the trick.

Well from asking my friends who are in Cambridge, they generally have about 7A*'s + and 4A's+ 90% +UMS so generally you can reasonably confident if you actually have these requirements that you would get into Cambridge. TBH Cambridge take the best so its hard to get in if you don't have the high grades because you will be squeezed out.

I hope/assume you're not suggesting that everybody with fantastic grades can expect an offer?
