Cardiff law school- Reputation/job prospects

HI!!

I am considering applying to Cardiff for law. After the degree I'm looking for a good career (basically making lots of money!HAHa!)

I thought Cardiff law school was well respected and would offer excellent prospects. However after snooping around on tsr I'm not sure anymore.
:frown:

People don't seem to think very highly of it!

Any helpful words/ advice appreciated!

Cheers

T
As a student at Cardiff, I can tell you that yes, it is respected, yes it is good, and yes, it's a nice place to study. As for career prospects, no idea.

Hi, I've moved the posts from your other thread (in the Cardiff forum) over to this one. It's best if everything is kept in one thread, I think. The law forum is probably better as you can get views from law students across the country (and even some who have already entered the profession).

As a good guide, any redbrick (Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield etc.) or "big city" uni (Newcastle, Nottingham, Cardiff, Glasgow etc.) will be of at least a "good" and solid standard and will be resepected. This is true of Cardiff.

As a guide, see this sticky

As you can see here, the general consensous is that universities who are

Oxford, Cambridge

(medium gap)

Durham, UCL, KCL, LSE, Bristol, Nottingham (Notts a strange one, not as traditional as the others, I'd say it's more popular in the city firms than the bar).

(small to medium gap)

Manchester, Warwick, Birmingham, Exeter, Leicester and possibly Newcastle (although I wouldn't place Newcastle as significantly above the other big city unis and redbricks).

After this, the difference is negligible, certainly amongst the traditional universities. Cardiff is, in my opinion, more than a match for Sheffield, Liverpool, Reading etc.

These groups are only of any real concern at the bar or city, not so much regional/provincial/high street firms. Here your uni "brand" would be as significant.

I don't know Cardiff's exact links with firms, but in my opinion you'll have very good prospects with the high street and regional firms (providing you get at least a 2:1 and have experience, of course. Your chances at the city are still reasonable with a top degree.

Hopefully some students will be able to give you specific information on the university's links. This possibly isn't my greatest post as I'm a little rushed. I'll try and be back later.
Thanks a lot river85. Cardiff generally doesn't get mentioned here that much as a top law school. I am aware there are better ones but I always thought Cardiff was a strong law school.

Maybe the fact its in Wales means it attracts fewer applicants than say Leeds/Liverpool which may be the reason it's rarely mentioned.

My concern was that I aim to work for a high street london firm and was unsure as to whether a Cardiff degree (2.1 +) would be sufficient.

Thanks for the help.
