Real 😭 the NEA and EPQ r literally the devil

Think my daughter would agree with you on that . She had to do NEA in geography and EPQ. EPQ is worth it in the long run as it does help contribute to the application. She finished her alevels last year and is in a gap year, so shes currently re going through her biology in prep for September start.

Hi,
I did have an offer for human geography but I've swapped to English lit! I'm planning on making it my insurance choice but was wondering if there were any student reps who could tell me anything about English that would probably be said on offer holder days (I've already been up for the human geography one and can't see myself having the time to make it back for English). Thanks in advance!

My daughter has an offer for BsC Geography and plans to make it Firm. She's so excited to come to Lancaster!

Accommodation-wise she's keen on Grizedale, Furness and County. But I wonder if someone could help? She doesn't want a college where the rooms are right in the middle of campus, overlooking Alexandra Square or the Spine. We toured one of the colleges on open day and the rooms overlooked the Square and it was really noisy. Which college would that have been? As she doesn't want that.

We live nearly 4 hours away so she will be there all the time and so something more like a House will suit her better.

We were 10 hours away at our most recent trip! 🫣

Hi @ELH24!

Congratulations to your daughter on her offer!

Bowland college has rooms that overlook the main square (Alexandra square) in bowland tower and some flats around the perimeter. However, you could always go for something like Bowland’s Ash House or Bowland Hall as these are off away from the centre of campus, more towards the north of campus. On the accommodation portal you should be able to specify a preference for the room type and college.

Grizedale, Furness and County are all further away from the centre compared to bowland. Grizedale is in south campus, just off the main spine. Furness is also on south campus but slightly less further down the spine from Alexandra square than grizedale. I lived in furness and found the accommodation to be nice and quiet as it was away from the spine and closer to the perimeter road. If you have a look at a campus map online you’ll find it by edwards Robert court next to fylde. It is also one of the smaller colleges which I think also contributed to it being quiet. County is the northern most college and is also away from the main spine.

Grizedale and County offer an accommodation type called “townhouses” this comprises of a downstairs kitchen and living space with 3 floors above. Each upper floor consists of 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. I believe the bathroom is usually shared between 2 people of the same gender. This would offer the most house like accommodation compared to the flats. The one thing to be aware of with the townhouses is that there’s no cleaning service. In most other flats cleaners will clean the communal areas so the kitchen and hallway and bathrooms if they are not en-suite.

Hope that helps! Let us know if you have any further questions about life at Lancaster.

I was just wondering if you could apply for specific accomodation rooms. Also, I was wanting to know a bit more about the colleges as I was only able to see Furness on the open day.

Which colleges host more social events/ live music, and are these loud to live in?

Also was wondering what standard shared accomodation in grizedale, county, Furness, pendle and Bowland is like? Specifically pendle, Furness and county main?

How many to a room, facilities, placement in campus and what they look like?

Sorry for the massive post, just unsure which to apply for as I'm not interested in a townhouse or en-suite, but am worries as to what the cheaper accomodation is like. The main thing I want to know was about the social events as I would enjoy the live music.

Hi @Justhere-0123
Unfortunately it is not possible to apply for specific accommodation rooms, when you apply you will be able to have a preference on the room type and college.
I lived in shared bathroom accommodation in Pendle in my first year and had a nice time. There was 8 of us in the flat with 2 bathrooms, and a kitchen. In your room the layout is pretty similar to other shared bathroom rooms with a large desk and wardrobe with plenty of storage and a sink in your room. Pendle itself is located a 5 minute walk from the center of campus (Alexander square), and most of the shared bathroom accommodation is in a quad with the Pendle cafe/bar at one side.
In terms of the other colleges county is the most northern college so is an equal 5 minute walk to the center of campus. Grizedale is next to Pendle so is slightly closer to the middle of campus, but not by a lot. Bowland is located right in the center of campus with some of the rooms overlooking alexander square or being very close nearby.
For live music, Pendle is known for its open-mic nights, however, no matter which college you are based in you can attend other colleges events.
Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions feel free to ask!

Grizedale townhouse is shared between 12. You have 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on each floor and on the ground floor a toilet next to the kitchen/dining area. There is also a living room area with a big blank wall where you can buy a projector and watch movies or play games on big screen. The Grizedale standard accommodation is same as pendle i was told on open day. We saw pendle and it was a flat of 8 sharing two bathrooms and a kitchen. Bowland, my daughter stayed there during the summer of last year whilst she was working in the city. You can apply for summer stays in Bowland and Furness. Bowland shared (bowland main) was a corridor of around 8 sharing a kitchen. at one end around 8 cubicles of shower rooms with toilets, and that was adjoined by another flat of 8 with a kitchen.
Daughter likes the open mic nights at Pendle. She has been to the other bars, but likes Pendle with her friends that belong from all colleges. Daughter is in grizedale college.

Hi, I have an offer for law at Lancaster and am struggling to choose between Lancaster and York.
Does anyone know what the ratio of coursework to exams is at Lancaster and how many of the optional modules you can pick. I'm also interested in whether there are small group discussions like at other unis and how many contact hours you usually have per week.
I couldn't find any of this on the website so would be really grateful if anyone here can help. Thanks

Hi, I've applied for theoretical physics with mathematics (I wonder if anyone else here has applied for it) Lancaster is my firm choice and I'm incredibly excited to attend

Hi Veritas 🙂 one of the student ambassadors on here is a phd student in physics and also did the masters course as well
My eldest daughter is currently in her 4th year of her integrated masters. Its physics degree but has gone down the modules of particle physics and cosmology. She has two more exams left, a viva and place to do (its like a presentation of her masters thesis which shes just submitted) and a promotional poster, and shes done. Lancaster has been absolutely amazing for her in terms of support, the two internships she did, and helping with her phd application. Wishing you the very best and enjoy Lancaster!

Hi @ElectricBlue13
Congratulations on your offers! In terms of optional modules, typically there is more choice in the 2nd and 3rd years of your degree as 1st year tends to be about learning the foundations for the rest of your degree. The optional modules for law can be found here Law LLB Hons (M100) - Lancaster University. Unfortunately I don't study law myself, so are unsure on the contact hours and group discussions, however there is an option to speak to current students on the Unibuddy platform found on this link Ask a Student - Lancaster University.
Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions about Lancaster, feel free to ask!
