Thank you so much for your reply, it really is good to have insight from a former student, (though we appreciate it might have changed). What you've stated matches with what we thought. So We're thinking Lonsdale and Grizedale. Do we have to give two preference options on the accommodation form?
Hi anon,
From what I remember you get to pick 3 accommodation choices and you rank these based on what you prefer. Also the university will ask you for an overall preference, which might be a college, a type of accommodation or location on campus eg. your overall preference might be for ensuite accommodation or to be in Lonsdale college. More information on how the accommodation application process works can be found here Undergraduate - Lancaster University
If you have any more questions feel free to ask!

Hey Anon,
Great Question, You only get to choose 1 minor and you have it throughout your first year. All minors carry the same weight which is double weight of your major modules (Ex: each module for you major would be 20 credits and selected minor will carry 40 credits)
They absolutely do not need to relate to your degree, this is a chance for you to study a subject or a field you enjoy or are curious about on top of your major. I study computer science, but the minor I chose was entrepreneurship because i find it interesting. Some of my peers took psychology, marketing, French, Maths, etc so its entirely up to you what you will enjoy learning more about.
You will be given a list of all possible minors you can take and they will all have a small description under them, just to summarise what you will be doing in that minor, how much exam to coursework weightage does it have, etc.
If you are unhappy with your minor, you are able to change it in the first couple weeks of uni.
The minor does not continue to your second year.
I hope this helps, please feel free to ask any other questions you have.

Hello Vyomika,

Thanks for your response!
So by 'does not continue onto your second year', do you mean that the minor system would not proceed onto the second year due to specialisation, rather than an exchange of minors? Are there electives then - I assume not?

Other than that, what's the overall climate/social atmosphere for Lancaster uni - what would you say is a unique quality that all Lancaster undergrads share - e.g. the desire to question, the desire to connect, the desire of solitude..?

Could a student ambassador or former student offer information about contact hours? Particularly for marketing (but appreciate that might be too specific)? Wondering how many hours per week are spent in seminars / lectures / tutorials? An example of a student timetable would have been great in the offer holder day presentation...

I received an email saying that the admissions tutor confirms their recommendation for my admission to the university but I haven't received a UCAS offer and the email didn't state if the offer was conditional or unconditional.
Can a rep please clarify?
Hi @Philip_04

Which department have you applied to?
Your offer should come through UCAS. If it has not already appeared on UCAS, I would recommend emailing the department and/or the admissions team. [email protected]

yhyh i went to the offer holder day a few weeks back. It was pretty interesting and i enjoyed it and since it was only an hour away from me it was easy to get there. Try catch the accommodation tour if u can and speak to the students about anything because they will be able to answer your questions.
I’m glad you had a good experience at the offer holder day @d4vid679 ! If you have any further questions the student ambassadors here will be happy to answer:smile:

Hey! We attended the offer holder day today, travelled for 3.5 hours to get there, we were really impressed, and the management school was great. Colleges.... would like ensuite room, in a social and friendly college with lots of activities and things going on/ nights out. We noted that near to the management school are Grizedale and Pendle which is best of these?. We heard Fylde and Furness were quieter? What about Lonsdale as we didn't visit that college? How many preferences do we have to give? Sorry for the gazillion questions... being so far away from home I need to make sure I am busy and have enough going on as I won't be going home on wknds....
Hi Anon,

Glad to hear that you enjoyed your offer holder day!

All 8 undergraduate colleges currently offer en-suite rooms so you have a vast array of choice.

Everyone seems to be biased towards their own college (I’ve been in Furness and Grad) but in my experience all the colleges are social and friendly. They each have a JCR which is a student run team who put on social events for their college throughout the academic year. In my first year I often attended Furness’ weekly pub quiz with my flat which was a lot of fun. Most students won’t go home every weekend. There are plenty of societies to get involved in that have socials throughout the week and at the weekend. Many societies have weekly nights out and there’s also more chilled societies for example baking on Saturdays.

I would think that Grizedale is the closest college to management school. However, it is important to consider that for many subjects not all of your teaching will be inside your department. You could attend lectures and seminars in rooms across the campus, however from the centre of campus most academic buildings shouldn’t be more than a 10 minute walk away.

I found Furness was set back a bit from the main spine of campus and so was nice and peaceful in the accommodation. I was told that Furness was one of the smaller colleges which was one of the reasons I went for it as I thought it would be less intimidating. Regardless I found plenty of people from the college and found it plenty social.

Lonsdale is in south west campus. So it is slightly detached from the main campus oval. But still walkable. Many people like this set up as it allows them to have a separation from home life and studying. It shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes to walk from south west campus to most places on main campus.

When I applied (2017 summer so things may have changed) I had to select 2 choices. These choices were a college and room type pair. So for example I put Furness en-suite, Grizedale townhouse. If you’re sure you want en-suite you could just put “1st choice college” en-suite; “2nd choice college” en-suite.

Hope that helps! Let us know if you have any other questions:smile:

Hi,

The standard college membership fee is set at £40. You pay this once in first year.

Hope this helps,

Hi Anon,
I'd say the overall social atmosphere at the uni is a real community and friendly feel. The college system really helps also to create smaller communities on campus.

Hi @Heloha41,
Whilst I don't study marketing, I might be able to provide an insight in general university contact hours. Lecturers and seminars etc. can happen between 9am-7pm (although most don't happen that late) monday to friday, usually you might find you have a few contact hours per day and the rest will be spent doing independent study.
If you would like to talk to a specific marketing student, our unibuddy website is great for this. I've linked it below.

Hi anon,
Yes, in general minors do not continue on into your second year and instead your timetable will be filled by modules from your major (the title of the degree you are studying) as you start to study more in depth topics. Within this major you generally have some freedom to choose modules, especially in later years. However this depends on your degree. Some degree courses have almost entirely optional modules by third year whilst others have mostly core (compulsory) modules with just one or two choices. There should be more information about this on the course page website.
Hope this helps,

Is this true?

Hi @GayleB

As it happens, the admissions team haven’t made lower offers on Bsc Biomedical science this year.

Lancaster do often make lower offers to applicants who place us as their firm choice, but this does vary by entry year and by course.

Hope that helps!
