How to focus in the deadline period as a student at Kingston University

Deadlines are officially around the corner, but don’t panic! Even if you’ve left your work a little bit last minute, there are some techniques that can help you tackle the work pile without wanting to tear your hair out 😂!

Before you approach things it can be good to make yourself a schedule and maybe even a weekly/daily to do list. This will help to give you a clear vision and mindset and prioritise your work depending on the intensity and due date for each assignment! A strong plan can help you think better and is essential to organising yourself for success!

Once you’ve made yourself a plan, it’s finally time to get your head down and find a method of work that makes you the most productive you can be! For a lot of us I can imagine our phones can pose a challenge and it’s just too tempting to constantly be checking them! A great way to avoid this is to find a friend from your accommodation or course (then you can work on exactly the same assignment) and head to the library to tackle it together. Not only can it make working a little less intimidating and a little more fun but it also means you can hold each other accountable and motivate one another to do your best. Town house, Kingston University library, is a great library to go with your friends. Not only is it award winning, has a cafe to grab snacks and drinks but is also open 24 hours around deadline periods (16th October- 17th December 2023).

For some people, working on your own is the best way to focus as it removes chance of distraction and if that’s you then the Pomodoro Technique may be exactly what you’re looking for! The method means setting a timer for 25 minutes and having a break of five minutes in a cycle that goes on for however long you’re working. This is a great way to work for a lot of people as you can get a fair amount done in twenty five minutes and the short breaks will help prevent you from burning out! For those of you that want to try this there are a number of apps that make a timer for the technique so you don’t have to worry about always resetting your timer.

Now you’ve tackled your deadlines it’s super important to treat yourself as you deserve it! I know that money can be tight but even heading out with friends for a coffee at townhouse or a little drink and a dance at the SU can be a good way to have a giggle and socialise after you’ve worked so hard! Deadlines aren’t easy but hopefully some of you feel more confident in ways to tackle them now. Just remember different things work for different people and there is always a way to succeed!

How are you guys planning to celebrate once deadlines are done?
