While true, wiwarin's point was that nowadays a bow and arrow's primary use is for leisure
As is the primary use of guns in countries where they may be legally owned.

After having this discussion with someone on MSN I thought it might be an idea to see what the rest of you think.

Guns are designed to kill, unlike knifes for instance, they have no primary use ahead of killing, whether animal or Human. What do you think the primary use of guns?
Is this going to be a veiled argument against the ownership of firearms?

Yes, guns were made to kill. They were an advancement from things like bows and arrows, also made to kill.

Well i don't think even sartori can claim that archery or guns were created for any purpose other than to kill. THat they have now found a 'leisure' use is totally secondary.
Not unlike the Javelin/spear.

However how many people go out into town waiting for someone to 'diss' them so they can whip out a javelin...

So what if I have no intention to kill anyone but enjoy shooting some rounds off at the local firing range? What is the primary use of my firearm?

Still, for instance, the internet was designed to enable an easier flow of data in the military and scientific research. Does that mean that it cannot be repurposed?

Is that even a word?

I would simply question the need to use guns for fun when they are abused so terribly by some other sects in society. And i knowww you're going to come back with 'well people are killed by cars all the time but you don't ban them' but i've had this debate a hundred times before and simple fact is some people like myself are prepared to sacrifice things for the greater good, and others...don't

The internet is abused by people to steal identities, view child pornography, and crash computers. Are you willing to sacrifice using the internet for the greater good?

Repurpose is not in the English dictionary.
Its a solely american word, and certainly sounds like one of those 80's 'hip' business phrases

A. What is the problem if it was created by Americans? Unless, of course, you have a prejudice against Americans.

B. http://www.freesearch.co.uk/dictionary/repurpose
A British dictionary.

C. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=repurpose%2BUK
There seem to be quite a few Britons who use the word.
