Aspiring Therapists

Hi all,

I am looking to apply for a masters and I live in central London has anyone gone to regents university London? I would like to study counselling and psychotherapy.

I am a bit nervous and have anxiety in regards to pursuing masters again but I want to be a therapist.

I’m looking into this too. Out of interest, have you ruled out other providers? And was there a reason you were looking at regent’s in particular?

Plenty of therapist roles dont need a masters at all, so really depends what type of therapy you are hoping to do.

Make sure the course is aligned with your future therapy career, as they are not all equal and do not lead to the same opportunities post qualifying.

Hi! Could you please tell me more about the difference between qualifications and job opportunities? I thought that without a master’s degree you can only work as an assistant psychologist and not as a real consultant. Or maybe you know where I can read about it?

I dont have a masters and I am a Clinical Psychologist (obviously have the doctorate). There are literally hundreds of different therapists so wont list them all here, but they all have different academic and practical requirements. Counsellors dont require masters, CBT therapists often do (although can be done on the job with a postgrad diploma rather than masters). It all depends on your interest and your end goal. If your goal is Clinical Psychologist I can help, but i am not an expert on the others at all.

Thanks for the answer! I'm new to this system of education in the UK. Did I understand correctly that at UK you can apply for a PhD without a master's degree? Are you an MBACP member?

Yes, you dont need a masters. A PhD is different than a Doctorate though (latter is a mix of practical and research, whereas former is all research).

No not a member as it is not a regulatory body for Psychologists.
