I got a high 2:2 in second year, how hard would it be to get a first

I got a 57.3% in my second year at uni, and I think it's worth 40% of my final grade. How hard would it be to get a first if the third year is worth 60%?

Thanks.

For a first you'd need 70% across the two years. Let's call your third year result T.

So we have:
(0.4 × 57.3) + (0.6 × T) = 70

Rearranging we get:
T = (70 - (0.4 × 57.3}) ÷ 0.6 = 78.5 (approx)

Is 78.5% in third year plausible?

Thank you for explaining that, I understand it is probably not doable. What if I wanted to achieve a 2:1?

The same calculation, but using 60 rather than 70:

T = (60 - (0.4 × 57.3}) ÷ 0.6 = 61.8 (approx)

Given that you achieved 57.3% in year 2, targeting 61.8% in year 3 seems a lot more achievable. :smile:

Thank you so much. I really appreciate you answering the question. What if second year was weighted 33% and third 67%, what grades would I need for both?

the sum is really simple, it's just 0.33xsecond year grade + 0.67xneeded third year grade = overall grade

Do you know how your final degree classification is calculated? If not, look it up in your uni's Academic Regulations - which will be sitting on their web site.

Yes I was told by someone on the course it was worth 40 / 60, but I contacted the uni and they just told me it was 33 / 67

OK. So just replace 0.4 (40%) with 0.33 (33%) and 0.6 (60%) with 0.67 (67%). You can do this with the formula for obtaining a first (which has 70 at the beginning) and for obtaining a 2:1 (which has 60 at the beginning):

T = (70 - (0.33 × 57.3)) ÷ 0.67 = 76.25 (for a first)
T = (60 - (0.33 × 57.3)) ÷ 0.67 = 61.33 (for a 2:1)
